Abstract
In today’s corporate society there are many avenues of communication between managers, employees and customers. Along with the different avenues of communication you have different writing styles. Your writing style depends on who you are writing to. While at work your writing should have a professional tone. If you are writing a friend then your writing will have different tones. Any correspondence sent at the workplace should be done with minimal errors and always tactful. It is very likely that your memos or reports will be forwarded on to someone else.
Many companies today require some form of communication between everyone in the company. There are many different ways to send a message to a supervisor or co-worker. Messages can be in the form of e-mail, fax or a report of some type. All messages being sent to someone within an organization should be grammatically correct and should always have a professional tone. Technical writing is vital in today’s working society. Technical writing should be clear and well organized so anyone can understand what is being read.
Of the various forms of writing, two common styles come to mind; technical and expository. Technical writing is just that, technical. It is a form of instructional or directional writing that should be understood by anyone who reads it. Technical writing needs to be precise. Expository writing is a type of narrative or opinionated type of writing. Technical writing can be in the form of an instruction manual for putting together a barbeque grill. An expository piece can be in the form of a restaurant critique, in which someone offers an opinion on a particular restaurant.
