Technical Lesson Plan Vlookup
Technical Lesson Plan
The VLOOKUP is a function in Microsoft’s Excel spreadsheet software that searches for a value in a selected table array and returns a value in the same row from another column in the table array. The V stands for vertical and distinguishes from its sister function the HLOOKUP which uses a horizontal list (Microsoft, 2013).

Figure 1. Creating of our data table

Figure 2. The blue box shows the information we will be looking up
Now in the blue box I have created 4 columns that match the information from the red table. The purpose of this demonstration is to explain how to use the VLOOKUP function which

Figure 3. Type a name from the First column in the table to begin
Now that the value to search is in the first column of the new table, we can use the VLOOKUP to search for specific information located in the same row.

Figure 4. Next in the adjacent cell type in VLOOKUP hit the fx button to enter in the function arguments
Now that the value to search is in the first column of the new table, we can use the VLOOKUP to search for specific information located in the same row.

Figure 5. Select cell H5 for the name of the customer, followed by the table in C:F and select 2 to lookup the value in the 2nd column, range lookup should be set to False for an exact Match.

Now select cell H5, the name of the customer we are looking up, for the Lookup_Value. Followed by the table array in C:F (the red cells) and then type two to look up the 2nd column in the table array. Range lookup should be set to False for an exact Match; true will find use the closest match. Repeat using Col_index_num 3 in cell J5 and 4 in K5.

Figure 6. Now when you select a new name in H5, the adjacent values will change accordingly

Now whatever name we put in cell H5 will change the values in the blue table accordingly.
