I was at Best Buy to buy a new laptop for school; the store was busy that day. I headed over to the computer section the line at the geek squad desk was about twenty-deep, and all of the blue shirts walked heads down with a purpose, because they were helping other customers. All around boxes were flying out the cages; I wandered if they had the same purpose as me. I wasn’t sure where to start so I went over by the Macs just to look at the ipads and see what else they had; after looking at the prices I moved on quickly. Feeling more at home in the pc area I begin my regimen of breaking down the laptops. I would look at where they put the usb ports, and the layout of the keyboard and mouse. I would then note the processor speed and memory as I closed the screen and would lift it to check the weight and sturdiness. Setting it back down I would check the screen lock and open it backup. I provably checked half a dozen in this form, until I came to one that really intrigued me. I looked at this ipad thin Sony laptop the screen was smaller than the base so when it opened up the bottom acted as a stand to put the computer at an angle. I followed my standard procedure to check it out, but when I went to open the screen back up I could not find the latch. I begin to have a Zoolander moment with this computer short of dancing around it and poking it with a stick. I leave it in its closed state and look at the laptop beside it. This was a move of reassurance, because I didn’t want to be the only one that could not open this thing. Finally after a few moments of acting as if I was interested in this laptop; a guy walks up as if her were Ben Heck, he tries the same things I have already. He then looked at me, and I act as if I have never seen this laptop before; I shrugged as

    1. Monica’s parents play a huge role in limiting her access to technology. They choose to not use technology which I think is the main reason why they wouldn’t buy a computer for their daughters. Their reasoning sounds extremely familiar to me because my parents have done the same kind of thing to me. I begged my parents for a cell phone from seventh grade until my sophomore year when I finally bought my own but they would always tell me I don’t need a cell phone while my mom had one and my dad had THREE for his work. Anyways, I can relate to Monica on many levels.…

"I sponsored the business case for the first mainframe computer we bought in 1987," Kelly recalls. "It wasn't an easy sell." (Reed, 2004) Kelleher had seen larger airlines waste, in his opinion, millions on new-fangled technology. He was skeptical that computers could benefit an airline where keeping costs low is a religion.…

Desktops are at the maturity/declining stage in their life cycle. The invention of laptops, tablets, and touch screen computers have drastically decreased the demand of desktops. Rather than pile more money into a service that may increasingly decline in the next few years, we have decided to cut back on manufacturing desktops. Our focus will be more towards laptops,…

With all the companies that were listed, it is easy to see how competition has helped tremendously in keeping prices down. The first computer I bought cost me $2500. It was a Pionex, 512 mb of RAM, Pentium processor, 120GB Hard Drive and a 15inch monitor than could be used for a boat anchor. The computer I have now cost me 1/3 the price. It has an Intel Core I5 processor, 1TB hard Drive, 6 GB of RAM, DVD RW drive, and a 24 inch monitor that weighs about 5 pounds. Now that we have seen that computers are made bigger, better, and cheaper, let’s discuss how they have changed the way some companies do business.…

HP created a remarkable new technology, but its targeted market never blossomed. Just at the end of the case as the clock was running out on the Kittyhawk team, Nintendo approached HP with its Nintendo 64 system with a slot for a 1.3” disk drive, and projections that it would sell several million units per day during the upcoming Christmas season. The problem was that they needed the drive for $49.95, and HP had designed the Kittyhawk for a different market at a cost of $250 per unit. The 1.3 drive was a potentially disruptive technology which could have been designed to a $49.95 price point, but HP had positioned it as a sustaining technology, as nearly as possible.…

Many changes in the marketing environment created the need for Geek Squad services. The most obvious relates to technology. Wireless high-speed Internet technology, laptop computers, high-definition televisions, MP3 players, tablet computers, and the connectedness between electronic devices such as computers, cellphones, and entertainment systems are just a few examples of complex products that now require installation assistance or maintenance.…

I was thirteen years old when I ripped open my Mom’s Macbook Pro. Using a screwdriver, pliers, and a toothpick I disassembled the computer part by part, organizing each piece into different sections, not knowing any of their functions or purposes. I was marveled by each stick of RAM, connected circuit, and processor. As I continued to dive deeper, I soon found the hard drive. A small three by three inch box that could hold hundreds upon thousands of bytes of information. I was awestruck. I was able to hold hundreds of documents, pictures, and songs, all in the palm of my hand. From here I gazed over its sleek black mother board, intrigued as to what all of the golden dots and miniscule black boxes did. My curiosity was sparked, and my Mom’s computer was in ruins. Furthermore, igniting my obsession with the hardware of computers.…

The multi-millionaire dollar empire that we know as Apple today started in the garage of Jobs’ parents. In 1975, Jobs and his friend, Steve Wozniak began building a prototype computer. One year later, this garage computer was dubbed “Apple I”. It was the first of its kind-- a personal computer. Less than two years later the Apple Inc. rolled out with Apple II which became the first widely-used personal computer in the world. Computers, previously common only to businesses, were now accessible to the average person. Personal computers changed the way people shared information; people could now communicate through email, and other online chatting sites, and by putting a personal computer in a person’s home they are able to access these utilities.…
