Teachers Should Be Allowed to Carry Weapons
Of all the places in the world, you would think that a school is the safest place for a child to be. Sometimes this isn’t the case. In this speech, I will talk to you about how allowing teachers to carry concealed weapons will be a good idea. I will talk about the advantages of allowing teachers to carry a concealed weapon, how allowing teachers to carry concealed weapons is helping other countries, and why Gun-Free zones aren’t working. Let’s start with the advantages of allowing teachers to carry a concealed weapon.
There are three main advantages for allowing teachers to carry a concealed weapon. The three advantages are casualties will be reduced if you could take down the shooter quickly before the shooter kills any more people, teachers can be a tremendous deterrent to crime, and teachers can help stop another school shooting for example, Columbine or Virginia Tech. Let’s start with the first advantage. Casualties will be reduced if you could take down the shooter quickly before the shooter kills any more people. An armed teacher provides more immediate protection for the students than a police officer on the phone. It will take probably 5-10 minutes before the police will even get there. That is too much time for the shooter to do whatever he wants. So, if some teachers were carrying a gun, they could take down the shooter quickly before more damage is done.
The second advantage is that teachers can be a tremendous deterrent to crime. With the proper training they can be. If police officers can be trained in a responsible manner for the uses of a deadly force, so can teachers. Proper training is the key. As I said if my first speech, there was an article in the New York Times stating that there is a tiny town in Texas that is allowing teachers to carry concealed weapons. The Superintendent David Thweat is the one that pushed for the policy to allow teachers to carry a concealed weapon. He is quoted for saying that, “Our people don’t want their children

Secondly, it may be argued that if a teacher has a gun the students will be kept safe from an invader. However, a gun on school property creates safety hazards, which could lead to a teacher or student being caught up in an altercation, and the absent-minded firing of a gun makes a dangerous environment for the impressionable youth to develop in. As president Randi Weingarten and his Michigan counterpart, David Heckler, state, having firearms in schools create a potential hazardous set of conditions that could result in a negative outcome. If teachers were armed, it would help bring down the risk of school shootings. During a school shooting, seconds matter. When the police are contacted, it could take up to 15 minutes or more before they arrive. In all that time students and teachers are getting killed. Teachers want to carry guns to be able to prevent this. They feel that they should be armed to protect students. Kasey Hansen, on New York Daily News, said, “I think every teacher should carry a gun. W are the first line of defense. Someone is going to call the cops and they are going to be informed, but how long is it going to take for them to get to the school? And in that time how many students are going to be affected by the gunman roaming the halls?” Because of the many school shootings in the past, teachers feel they should be armed to decrease the risk of this happening and to protect students if it…

All this going on around a student could make them very uncomfortable. Personally speaking, I wouldn’t want to come to class everyday if I know my teacher had a gun in the class. The fact that a gun is in the class can mess with a student’s learning, because instead of focusing on their lesson, they would be focusing on the danger they could possibly be in. As student, we should feel comfortable around our teachers if we don’t feel comfortable around anyone else; teachers bringing guns to school shows students that they don’t trust them nor feel comfortable around…

Having an armed officer at a school would have the staff and students feel safe, because they wouldn’t have to worry about what others may bring to the school. Many teachers feel like they are at risk for harm when they come to school. That kind of stress can lead to the teachers getting sick and major health issues. Students who have this same fear will start doing poorly in school, or just not want to go so they ditch school. That isn’t a healthy environment, and is not fair to the staff and students to live in fear at the school.…

Over the past couple of years, the debate over whether or not handguns should be allowed on school campuses has exploded into a wide variety of opinions. Handguns are allowed in many other places, but should they really be brought into a learning environment? Many people are starting to voice their opinions over this topic due to the large increase of school shootings and suicides within recent years. “Since 1995, more than thirty students and teachers have been killed and approximately one hundred have been wounded as a result of shootings at American schools” (Egendorf). Letting students bring handguns onto campuses provides numerous risks and benefits for the safety of schools across the nation.…

In the article “Armed to Teach: Argyle ISD Sticks to It’s Gun Policy” Selena Hernandez states that “it’s safe to say Argyle ISD is ready to start the school year with guns blazing. The district is on target to continue its new policy of allowing some teachers to pack heat on campus.” Hernandez also states that “gun-toting teachers must have and maintain a handgun license; pass a psychological evaluation; and undergo firearms and emergency response training.” This type of thing is very possible and obviously can be done. This might be a great model for other school districts around the country to…

In our society carrying concealed weapons seem to be a major issue. Authorities should allow anyone to carrying weapons after they pass a background check and complete training classes. In his essay” Letting Teachers Pack Guns will make America’s School Safer” Lott, argues that citizens have the right to protect themselves. I agree with him because accepting this law people can defend themselves from criminals before police arrive. Also legalizing hidden weapons will help to decrease violence in the streets and citizens can stop any dangerous incident from escalating.…

One of the hot debates in the United States, and recently growing within the topics most discussed is whether professors and students on college campuses should be allowed to bring concealed handguns to school. Concealed carry permits allow keeping a gun in public in a concealed manner, which can either be on the persons being or in a close proximity. There are many different reasons why having a concealed weapon could be beneficial to college campuses nationwide, and why we should be allowed to take our registered guns to school.…

Arming teachers is a very tough topic to talk about. The first documentary that we watched showed a school that teaches students how to react in a shooting situation, and also arms teachers. I believe that this school is going a little overboard with arming the teachers. The program to train children in self defense is a good idea though. I'm not saying that we should constantly live in fear of a school shooting, but defense training would be a good workshop to do with students. They brought up a very good point in this documentary when they mentioned physical education classes, and the lack of benefits from. I believe that a self defense class would be very useful to ready students for their future. This could help them not only defend themselves…

My first reason why I think guns should be allowed to be carried by teachers on school campuses is because it could save lives. The thing about this though is that if there was a school shooter on the campus, would he suspect a teacher to have a gun? Of course not. This is great idea for schools that have had incidents that might lead to a shooting.…

Despite the numerous parents and staff that are in favor of the new transition of teachers with guns there are a few that are not as adaptable with this change as others are. Teachers such as Ms. Moffis that stated, “Traditionally in this area, schools have already been a very safe and welcoming community,” referring to teachers having guns in the classroom, she added, “Nobody’s ever thought about needing that kind of thing at school.” This coming from a town that is well versed in handling guns within their own community and training their children at an early age the proper understanding of firearms.…
