TANG'S DTLEMMA AND OTHER PROBLEMS: ETHNTFICATIONPROCESSES SOME AT MULTICULTURAL WORKPLACES

1. Introduction In thispaper I will considerseveralditt'erent typesof ethniticationprocesses related to the socialorganizationof people in multiculturalworkplaces.lBy ethnification process mean a seriesof actionswhich either directlyor indirectlymake an ethnic I characterization some individual or group a normativelyand/or conventionally of 'proper' description.2 Most of the social organizingI will be talking about will be the organization face-to-face of communication within various socialactivities.My goal here is to show how ethnicity, as one of many possibledeterminantsof an identity, is constituted in this Upe of communication. Other types of social organizing dealwith, e.g.job assignments, I recruitment,productionprocesses have I no direct communicativedata from; rather the data I have is of people telling us how thesethings are carried out. What I take ethnicityto mean is, hopefully,what the peopleI investigate mean by it. Thus I alsohope to showsomeaspects and uses of ethnicityas a member's concept,the type of work it does and when, how, and why it is used. The work presentedhere is micro-orientedand empirical.I will make some claimsabout the locus and functionalityof ethnicity for a few of those very same peoplemore macro-orientedinvestigators talk about in statisticalterms. Whereas the questionfor more macro-oriented work is 'Who and what are the X (Swedish, Jewish,Kurdish, etc.)?', I feel my question is 'Why and how are the X?'. The distinction between macro and micro here is premisedon the argument that'who and what' questionsare answeredby social scientists lists of traits which are as potentially infinite and can not supply necessaryand sufficient conditions for identifying someoneas of a certain ethnicity.Instead,the counter argument goes, the identification a personon ethnicgroundsis...
