Everyone experiences loneliness in some part of their life and cope with it in many different ways; agreed John Cacioppo, Aubrey Hammack, and Hara Estroff Marano. Each of these writers wrote articles about the battles people face when dealing with loneliness, and how it affects your health. Hammack and Marano’s articles are similar to the story Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. They reveal how many people can function and go on with their lives easier when they have friends and family that will be there for them no matter what. Even though George and Lennie weren’t family they still had each other and weren’t lonely like Curley’s wife. Many people who are dealing with loneliness don’t know how it affects them. Cacioppo states how loneliness can be bad for your health in many different ways. Not having close friends or any social contact with people you are close to do bring up emotional discomfort is known as loneliness. This is what many of the workers were dealing with in the story, Of Mice and Men. As George mentioned, “Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world.” Marano verifies her research on loneliness through people’s health. She adds that awareness of loneliness appears through the brain and makes us sad. Curley’s wife experiences this in the book because her husband makes her stay in the house all day by herself. When she is feeling lonely she goes to a handyman on the ranch to talk to them. None of the handymen give her comfort or communicate back to her because they know that Curley will get mad, the men don’t want to give Curley trouble because he is the boss’s son. Social needs affect your health; it clogs your arteries and even affects your memory. John Cacioppo states that one of the best guarantees to living a long healthy life is the connections you have with the others. Social isolation has a definite impact in health.
