Sweat: Delia
Forever in Sweat
“Sweat” by Zora Neale Hurston is a story of power between a couple. The characters are executed perfectly on how their own behaviors of power either worked against them or worked in favor of them. “It will come back to haunt you”, is a perfect example my mother told me if I tried to get revenge on a friend. My mother would say, “do not wish anything bad or do anything to someone else you do not want happening to you.” This is a great quote I have lived by throughout my teenage and young adult life. In Delia’s case, when Skye wants his revenge, she does not tolerate his behavior and even comes back to “haunt him”. She acts in peculiar ways towards him that angers him even more to the ultimate revenge.
Delia Jones is the main character of the story. She is a wash-woman in Florida and works very hard for the white people in her town. She is perceived to be an independent woman with power. She works hard for what she wants; she has her own job, and has her own house to grow old in. She is married to an abusive man named Skye. Her husband is very cruel towards her and doesn’t appreciate the hard work that she does.
Skye, her husband, is also an important main character in the short story. He does not appreciate Delia at all. When they got married, they were in love but that quickly faded away. As Hurston says, “Anything like flowers had long ago been drowned in the salty stream that had been pressed from her heart.” All their love has gone for each other. He would go out on trips with all the money and come back to her without a cent. He was not supportive of her work. He was unfaithful to her because he loved fat women, and she was skinny. All he was was physically abusive to her while she sweat and worked.
Other than Delia and Skye, there are a few characters that give more meaning to the story. The village men on Joe Clark’s porch are the flat characters in this story. They are gossipers but they effectively give the background/history of both

The short story “Sweat,” by Zora Neale Hurston, seems to exemplify the epitome of a bad marriage. Hurston uses foreshadowing and irony to demonstrate the disintegrated relationship between the abusive husband and the diligent wife. Throughout the story, it becomes obvious that the husband does not oblige by the motto, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Hurston’s use of irony and foreshadowing helps reveal the fact that “the good will prevail” and Sykes will finally get what he deserves.…

A jealous husband, angered by the fact that his estranged wife is involved in a new relationship, acts out in a presumable crime of passion and murders the man she was seeing. The story takes place in Maycomb County Alabama in the 1930`s. Maycomb is the typical southern town, small square houses, everybody knows everybody, a feeling of hominess, only one of everything (post office, grocery store, school etc.) Maycomb County is a bit of a special case because it is rather far from any other towns. When Maycomb was founded it was built a very long way upstream from the ocean on a small river which was unusual back in the day considering boat was the main mode of transportation then. Maycomb is a kind of boring uneventful town the most interesting thing to happen is what Miss Stephanie can manage to come up with and gossip about. The setting of Maycomb county relates to the main theme of the book in the way that…

To begin with, Delia shows the characteristics of a carer. Delia was “ a wash woman, and Monday morning meant a great deal to her,”(1). This quote represents how big of a deal her job of washing clothes for the white folk meant to her. Even though Sykes would down talk her “Delia never looked up from her work, and her thin, stopped shoulders sagged further,”(2). This quote shows how dedicated she is to her job. Even though she is hurting, she manages to do her job because she loves and cares about her job and wants to make her and Sykes marriage work. Sykes exclaimed, “Ah done tole you time and again to keep them white folk’s clothes outa dis house. He picked up the whip and glared down at her,”(1). This quote shows that even though Sykes disrespects her and beats on her she continues to love and care for him, even though he does her wrong. Delia’s character is shown hard at work on a Sunday morning to get ahead of her work load. She works hard to support her family. Her diligence in working on Sundays sets her character up with patience and caring. The story tells us that Delia built the house and planted the trees there too. The strength I mention comes from this patiently waiting for a confirmation of what is in her heart turned cold towards Sykes. This is mentioned as, “It cowed him and he did not strike her as he usually did.” This marriage was abusive and her being brought up to love one another, she didn’t want to admit at the time that she had chosen the wrong pathway. People will bend as far as they can before they realize they are about to break. Sometimes, however, we will get a glimpse of glory and want to fight back the evil that traps us.…

Set in the 1920s American southern state of Florida, Delia Jones, an African American working class wife, lives a life full of brutality. As a woman, she is a victim of an abusive husband in a culture where no one steps in to define females. During the early 20th century, society expects women to defer to men and be subordinate to men. In Zora Neale Hurston’s “Sweat”, the fictional short story alienates Delia from society due to her gender which highlights the masculinity during the 1920s, the assumed weakness of working class women, and the expectation that women were supposed to be discriminated.…
