These reptiles like the humid swamps of the everglades and coastal region of the southeast. The eastern diamondback has started seeking new habitat on the northern most islands of the Florida Keys. How do they get there, they swim. The more people encroach on their habitat the more of these reptiles get pushed out. As a result of this, the population of the animals is also on the decline. Some areas host “rattlesnake roundups” where large numbers of these snakes are caught and slaughtered. Despite the disappearance of the diamondback rattlesnakes, there are no laws protecting them. This cannibalism tends to be density dependent and self-regulates populations of C. 5 maenas (Moksnes, 2004). Mortality by means of predation by H. sanguineas serves to further thin populations. C. 5 maenas is also very efficient in selecting habitats with low risk of predation (Moksnes, 2002). H. sanguineus populations are at higher densities in rocky intertidal areas, the same refuge habitat preferred by juvenile C. maenas. In response, C. 5 maenas has shifted habitat usage to areas with reduced refuge (Jensen et al. 2002). 5 This habitat shift also creates a shift in diet in adults from primarily consuming mussels to primarily consuming red algae (Griffen et al., 2008). Reduced refuge creates risk of predation by seabirds, fish, and other predators. Dietary shifts of C. 5 maenas in the presence of H. sanguineus could reduce C. maenas populations in two ways. First, this shift in diet decreases nitrogen consumption which slows growth rates of C. 5 maenas, potentially extending the time susceptible to size dependent predation (Griffen, 2008). In the presence of H. sanguineus, C. maenas typically forages for red algae (Chondrus crispus) containing 0.4%-1.4% nitrogen with higher values in winter and lower in summer (Chopin and Floch, 1992). Although evidence has shown that there is a recent change in the increase of the cownose ray that has caused a large boom, it's Well known that the cownose ray is a predator of shellfish when the water becomes warm. The marine systems caused by the removal of sharks remain misleading, due to the significant declines in large coastal sharks in the northwest Atlantic Ocean, which caused dramatic increases in abundances of smaller elasmobranchs (referred to as “Macropredators”) over the predation release.
