Ingenuity…What’s that?
ONE CAN’T RUSH PERFECTION Ingenuity is always a quality that one cannot lack if he or she is going to be part of a development team aiming to sell a product to a worldwide population. Realistically, there is no one sure way to appeal to every single being of the world’s population but by satisfying a majority, dissenters will have no choice but to adopt or not use the product. Society currently is in a state of conformity and how the saying “go with the flow” goes. Most innovations of today are widely accepted by a large group of people and that in turn leads to more and more adopters, proving the success of that innovation. Eventually those “innovative” ideas will run out because everything humanely possible will be in existence. Microsoft’s Surface Pro laptop-in-disguise1 tablet is no different, a “flawed”2 device which has seen improvements to its design and structure over the past few years making it slowly approach perfection.
Microsoft’s Surface Pro is one of the newer innovative devices that was initially introduced in February 20133 and has seen a much shorter succession cycle than that of any other popular tablet manufacturer, namely Apple. Adoption rate was not at its best with the initial introduction of the Surface Pro first generation device as it lacked in the battery life area along with the awkward and uncomfortable design. However, the innovation introduced to the public was an accomplishment on its own. Apple, like many other OEMs and manufacturers, maintain a succession line of almost exactly a year before a device is refreshed. From a business standpoint, this makes sense but this only proves that economic benefit truly limits innovation. Microsoft aims to provide a companion device capable of replacing a laptop rather than complement it as other

By launching IPAD, in January 2010, and releasing it into the market in April, Apple introduced a potential new product category in computers which is likely to change the way consumers interact with their devices. IPAD was able to meet a changing consumer need which saw them preferring to ‘swipe a finger across a touch screen’ instead of using a keyboard. More than 15 million units were sold in the first year alone. In a move which surprised many market watchers, Apple launched IPAD2, in March 2011, slightly more than a year after the first IPAD was released onto the market. Surprisingly!, because many marketers would have thought that IPAD1 had not yet gone through its full product life cycle. However, this move by Apple is in response to the changing competitive environment which has seen growth in the interest of tablet computers from competitors. Analysts predict the computer tablet market to treble in size in 2012. By launching IPAD2, Apple has left competitors playing ‘catch up’ in a growing segment with consumers hungry for new products. There are a dozen or more competitors with rival tablets to IPAD2 likely to be launched in 2011 from competitors like Microsoft and Toshiba.…

“Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT)” had a 52 week low at 39.86 during the Month of February 2015 due to the lack of corporate income as swell as the loss of consumer interest towards Microsoft’s new innovative product “Surface Pro”. The 52-week high for the company was 50.04 as the new speculation of Google’s Android section and Microsoft teaming together to produce new smartphones. Though this would only be competitive towards the cellular market, the company has also bought many rights to various prominent video game designers as well as the unveiling of Microsoft office 10. As…

The famous American inventor, Thomas Alva Edison, once said: “Anything that won't sell, I don't want to invent. Apple is one of the best known and widely used brands on the market. Any individual who goes for shopping does not necessarily end up buying products. There are several stages a consumer goes through before he finally picks up things available in the market. Buying an apple iPad can satisfy both psychological and functional need of a customer. For example the person can use it to relax with friends, and at same time conduct business on it, such as trading stocks. Functional needs pertain to the performance of a product and service while Psychological needs pertain to the personal gratification of consumer’s association with the product or service [Grewal & Levy, 2012]. A survey that was conducted on usage of ipad reveals that, there is 64% increase in usage of ipad than to computers. The more people play with the ipad, the more they like it, and the more they use it [2]. This clearly states that people are highly satisfied with the product and are willing to use it more than any other gadgets.…

The same factors that are the key to reaching maximum market potential Awareness, Availability, Ability to Use, Benefit Deficiency, and Affordability. Take the release of both Apples' iPod and iPhone, both of these products had great pre-release awareness, during the pre-release a lot of people learned from reading press releases and other media how to use them. When they were finally released it was a very wide release making them readily available, for a day or two anyway. The only problem with this products was affordability, the price of the product itself was not out of reach for most working adults, the problem came with the opportunity cost for the individual, what they would have to give up to get one.…

My father-in-law was so frustrated by his "new" Iphone 4. I was never (and still am not) much of a fan of Apple products. My reluctance and negativity about Apple products notwithstanding, I silently smiled and gently shook my head at the situation unfolding in front of me. I knew my Droid very well and was a loyal user. Because of my brand bias, lack of knowledge, and attitude about my father in law's current situation, I was not being much of a help. It was not because I did not love this man dearly; simply my judgmental attitude and general lack of faith that he was capable of maneuvering such a complicated device was too much to overcome. Luckily, my wife quickly stepped in and showed him how the phone could do things that he was currently using his clunky laptop to accomplish. Before long, he was using his phone to make calls, send texts, take pictures, write and receive emails, play music, watch movies and more. If we are going to adapt to our technologically savvy world, we need to be able to adapt to people from all sections of the adoption curve, from innovators who rush to buy new things the day they come out to laggards like my father-in-law.…

Thanks to the wide range of ways to advertise through different world wide and local medias, products like tablets have been spoken off or shown to a very wide range of people. It is because of this advertising that society learns about trends and what is the newest technology, how it works, and why they “have” to have it. Most of the population has knowledge of how to use the Internet, as well as how practical things like tablets can be for a person who is very busy and cannot carry large numbers of items as they go from day to day, or simply want to downsize the number of things they do carry by simplifying things. A tablet is effective no matter what brand due to the basic functions all tablets do (Apple may have started it, but other brands have picked up the slack and have sent their creations forward as well).…

Microsoft’s CEO, Steve Ballmer, in an email addressed to his entire staff, let his colleagues know that the path he wanted to see the company on was one that could “innovate with greater speed, efficiency and capability in a fast changing world” (Ballmer, 2013). There are several major initiatives which are going to be used as vehicles to achieve the change envisioned by the CEO. When it comes to the end product, Microsoft plans on developing products which no longer stand alone. Products which work seamlessly with each other as a family is the model the company wants to follow. Of course, before the end products can be developed in a synergistic way, there must be a work environment which encourages such development. These changes are the most challenging because they involve information, personalities and…

In today’s digital world, tablet computers are the leading mobile devices for daily usage. Eagerness for buying a tablet is spreading around the world. In subways, in restaurants more and more people are seen with a tablet in the hand. Some of them play games, some navigate through the Internet. Today, most people prefer to buy a tablet computer instead of a notebook or netbook. The question is why people buy tablets? They are not cheap, relative to their notebook and netbook equivalents. They cannot perform all the functions of a typical computer. Is the key of tablet computers’ success efficiency or marketing strategies and competition? I guess both of these are important factors in the success of tablet computers.…

Under Ballmer, Microsoft was not developing fast enough. There was little innovation taking place. According to the Wall Street Journal, about 85 percent of the revenue is contributed by just two products: Office and Windows (Ovide, Rosenbush 2013). Satya Nadella’s goal is to eliminate any obstacles that come in the way of innovation. Not only did he want to bring in new ideas to Microsoft, but also wanted to do focus on the type of innovation unique to his company (Kimberly 2014). He initiated the innovation process which has advanced dramatically in order to cope with the new…
