Support children and young people’s health and safety. Outcome 1 Know the legislative and policy framework for health and safety
1.1- Describe how current health and safety legislation, policies and procedures are implemented in the setting.
A schools Health and safety policy should conform to the requirements contained in the Health & Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. Specifically the policy should contain :-
a) a General Statement of commitment to H&S, signed by Head/Chair of Governors or indicating that it has been endorsed by the committee of the Governing Body which has responsibility for H&S;
b) details of individual responsibilities for H&S, under a heading of Organisation, together with a diagrammatic representation of reporting lines; and
c) the Arrangements in place to ensure safety. This section is subdivided into two, General and Specific.
The Headteacher will identify who is to put the policy together to suit any specific H & S requirements that the school may have. The policy should then be discussed by other staff/governors to ensure it reflects actual practice and further alterations/amendments made, if required, to achieve this.The policy then needs to be formally approved, and then signed either by the Head Teacher and Chair of Governors or by the Chair of the Governors Committee with responsibility for H&S. The master copy of the policy, the original signed copy, should then be kept in a central location, ideally the school master policy file, together with copies of the relevant supporting paperwork, e.g. H&S Manual, standards and specific risk assessments referred to in the policy. A copy of the policy will then need to be brought to the attention of all governors, staff and volunteers. It is recommended that each member of staff be given a copy of the policy for their own file.
