In this passage I am going to describe one of my best memories growing up as a child. One family event that I always enjoyed doing and was always patiently waiting on its arrival was the family summer vacation. Our summer vacation wasn’t like many kids but we made the best by going to hang with our grandmother. Every summer every child in the world wishes to spend most of the time playing, eating chocolates & ice-cream and visiting the most exotic places of the world. Their dream is being full filled in their summer vacations. In these summers my parents planed to take me along with my siblings to our grandmother’s home that is situated in a small town named Elaine, Arkansas. We considered it as a great plan because growing up there for such a small time it would be nice to go visit again. For us, going down was the best thing that ever happened to us because our grandmother still stayed about 45mins away from us and we wanted to see her everyday almost. So the next day when school gets out for the summer break, we would run home and pack our bags and wait for our parents to arrive home to take us on our summer vacation. Our grandmother was very excited about seeing us as we were visiting her after such a long time. Our grandmother lived with one of our uncles and one aunt. The house was kind of crowded due to her having not enough room for everybody but she was excited about our stay and would always say “I love to have my grandchildren around”. Now don’t get me wrong but Elaine is a small and beautiful place filled with a lot of stores and different monuments to look at. There is a famous china man shop where most people would go and buy goods for their families. We use to always ask her for small amounts of money just to go to the store and buy snacks such as Little Debbie Cakes and drinks.     If a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, then Summer Ventures was a leap. The closest I have ever gotten to actually living a college life was when I went to Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics for four weeks in the summer of my sophomore year. My experience at Summer Ventures was truly an un-forgetful one. Not only did I meet new friends and enjoyed my stay at East Carolina University, taking part in Summer Ventures made me realize that college is the right step for me after high school. I see myself engaging in the environment of the college life and going to classes in the morning and reporting to the dorms before curfew as I did during Summer Ventures. I was used to my mom doing my laundry and changing my bed sheets, but after I went to Summer Ventures I gained a sense to independence, responsibility, and maturity. I learned to take care of myself without my mom and dad always being around. I learned to set an alarm and wake myself up, instead of having my dad wake me up every morning. Time management was the most important thing I learned. The camp wasn’t just fun and games of the college life; I also had to go to classes in the morning. After classes I had to plan out when I was going to study for the class and what time I should take out from the day to work on project and get stuff done at the library. I learned that time is the most important thing that a student has. If you are out of time or if you waste your time, you won’t be able to get that precious time back. I learned to do things myself, and to my surprise, I actually enjoyed taking care of myself and being independent. I would love to do this for the next four years after high school when I’m off to college. Summer Ventures not only confirmed my ambition of going to college but also helped my come out of my bubble.     After my first week of the Summer Bridge Program at Penn St-Abington, I learned a lot about the differences between high school and college. I really understand in high school that you must be there during the allotted hours, success rides on the teacher, and that we can get away from not reading the text for class and in college you have more freedom, harder courses, and longer hours of studying. We learned how to become an efficient and effective learner. What I learned from that lesson is that, I have to focus much more and study much harder then what I did in high school. Also that college is no joke since it’s a privilege and that high school is a right that we have to go. To me the most effective strategy I learned is how to become a better listener and how to be a successful student in college. The way I’m going to be a better listener is by using study strategies, note taking strategies and go to a tutoring center if I have trouble. What I learned so far relates to the present is that some strategies I never used or thought about.     I was raised in a small, but familiar town on the outskirts of Tallahassee known as Havana. A place where everyone practically knows everyone that lives there. My hometown upholds a sense of charm and southern hospitably in the atmosphere, with the many boutiques and restaurants for one to enjoy.
