Summer Holiday
Describe how you have spent summer (or long school) vacations during the past two years.

Few years ago, we took a vacation to my grandmother’s place. It was a long exhausting journey to our destination I remember traveling in that crowded bus and from then on I don’t remember how I got from that bus to my grandmother’s home. I just recall sleeping through out the entire journey. The very next morning we decided to leave for a nearby waterfall. I took the responsibility to pack our snacks and dry fruits. We left around 8 o’clock in the morning. It was sunny and humid, so we decided to just rest and start out early the following morning. We went on the jeep, which was named by the local as “Moon Car”. The bumpy roads and the strong wind made us feel that we were dancing with the breeze. We were very close to the downstream of the fall when we saw a man preparing to do his bungee jump. The man had dropped his coat over the side of the hill and we all watched as it fell and swirled around in the whirlpool. After that we went to “Subholong”, it is one of the small villages in the south eastern region of Bangladesh which has its own waterfall. When the boat reached close to the bottom of the falls everyone could feel the power of the falls by the incredible mist and loud roar of Subholong fall. The incredible history of my ancestors related to this falls came to life when I actually viewed them with my own eyes. Neither novel could possibly give an understanding of the vastness of the falls nor could it bring to life the remarkable history behind this amazing wonder of nature. After the boat ride, we met the village’s chairman; he had a very fast Chakma accent. He helped us decide what attractions were worthwhile. After visiting the place and the fall we decided to make our way to my grandmother’s place. It was my father who stopped us not to leave that place but unfortunately except me no one gave ears to his words. Ultimately my father and I were left

One morning, we decided to go out with some of the guests from the hostel for a hike along the hills by the seashore. These hills were covered in thick blades of grass but had rock faces that were pointed out towards the water. If you looked to your left you’d see these hills go for miles; mound after mound, circular shaped huts with cone shaped roofs sitting on top. African trees as well, looking as if the wind was blowing all the branches to one side of the trunk but they stood absolutely still; frozen in time. To your right you’d see the ocean go out for as far as you can see, while standing on a cliff with an almost vertical drop. From looking at the cliffs from the sides, it showed the many trails descending down the cliffs made by mountain goats and every once and a while you could see one half way down; climbing up. Although our surroundings were incredible, the heat was as well. We went through several bottles of water through-out the hike. Our leader, an African local, lead us down one of the more climbable hills to the ocean floor where it was covered in rock. With the sun beating down on us we felt trapped because we couldn’t swim in the water, the waves were too strong we’d be thrown up against the rocks.…

The mountains were stone dark, secured with trees whose hues were a blend of woodsy cocoa, knoll, key lime, and margarita green. Scattered powder-puff mists gradually fled over the sky and the sun feed like a bolt. Seeing this made me feel like I inadvertently touched base to paradise. I breath gradually, attempting to recall each snapshot of me being encompassed by woodland, sky, and mountains. We began climbing the gigantic mountain, talking, grinning and chuckling together. After like an hour we sat down for a moment on an immense uneven and dusty rock close to the waterfall. The wind that blew through the trees into our confronts now conveyed a light sprinkle from the waterfall, and a clue of peace. The sound of the wind shrieking, the waterfall smashing against the stones and the fowls singing their wonderful tunes, made me feel considerably more joyful than I was at that point. We began moving to the top once more. My legs began to hurt yet I didn't give an indication of my torment. I raised my eyes to the sky, and my sight fell on the hawk who skimmed over the wind. At that time, I craved flying as well, over the mountains and over the oceans. I strolled slower now, thinking how brilliant it would be to fly, and the greater part of the…

We were all sucked dry from the sun that day with zero energy left, we scavenged what we could and we still ate better than we could have at any local dinner. The day was still long and was only going to get hotter and longer even as the day came to a close. There was more things to do around the land than there was at any theme park. So as we all sat around and waited for something to do you could tell that everyone was thinking the same thing as sweat poured down all of our faces. The cold spring fed creek was the only thing that was going through my mind and I knew that was the only thing going through anyone else’s. We walked down to the creek as there was no other way that you could reach it, and as we got closer and closer you could hear the light eco of the fifteen foot waterfall coming off of the trees. The only thing I was looking for was the spit of the water flowing up through the large oak and misquote tree branches. You knew when everyone saw the water, you could see the sight of the crystal clear water shining off of everyones eyes and you could tell that there was a sudden sign of relief that came upon everyone after the long walk through the large misquote trees avoiding as many thorns and cactuses as they possibly could, being careful as could be you weren't going to miss all of them. And there was no better feeling than soaking your wounds in that…

“And on your left you’ll see one of the tallest waterfalls in the world” the train conductor announced. Everyone shuffled for their camera to capture the moment. As the scene came into view the cog train was filled with the sound of a disappointed gasp, followed by glances to the vested instructor that read ‘are you kidding me’. The “waterfall” looked more like a miniscule stream than a massive landmark he told us it would be. Because we were near the top of Pike’s Peak, he wasn’t completely wrong. We were expecting something the size of Niagara Falls.…

He collapsed to the ground, unable to comprehend what had happened before him. For a moment the whole world paused and the the howling wind remained still. Moments later, he rose from the ground and turned back the way he had came with a blank expression. The smell of alcohol consumed his thoughts and the notebook full of unwritten stories lay abandoned in the snow path. He walked day and night until coming to the bottom of the mountain once again. With tears in his eyes, he kissed the flat ground beneath him. He never realized his notebook was missing, or that the death of his new friend would break him…

In the world of politics, one of the most important things is who you know. Knowing people will bring a politician success. Chris Matthew stressed one-on-one communication and “retail politics” in this first chapter of his book. He knows firsthand because he was in Washington for many years observing and learning. Not only is it necessary to know as many people as possible, but it is also important to make the person feel that their concerns are cared for on a personal level. Knowing people is not only important in the political world, but it is also important in the real world. The more people you know, the more opportunities will arise for you. In the book Chris Matthew talks about how many popular politicians rose to the top because they made the effort to get to know everyone, especially those who are important. This can apply to any work environment. Networking is a very important part of life. It is important for all of us to remember to treat each person with care because they will potentially be important in our lives.…

As I entered the hidden destination, there it lay, a massive 70 foot tall waterfall. The water was rushing down the smooth side of this massive stone. Trees were hanging over the sides of the waterfall as if they were staring at their death. I was frightened to do what I was about to do, but instead of pondering the situation, I threw on my swimming trunks and made my way over to the base of the deleterious waterfall. I grabbed a rope that was on the side of the waterfall, covert in some bushes.…

After my first week of the Summer Bridge Program at Penn St-Abington, I learned a lot about the differences between high school and college. I really understand in high school that you must be there during the allotted hours, success rides on the teacher, and that we can get away from not reading the text for class and in college you have more freedom, harder courses, and longer hours of studying. We learned how to become an efficient and effective learner. What I learned from that lesson is that, I have to focus much more and study much harder then what I did in high school. Also that college is no joke since it’s a privilege and that high school is a right that we have to go. To me the most effective strategy I learned is how to become a better listener and how to be a successful student in college. The way I’m going to be a better listener is by using study strategies, note taking strategies and go to a tutoring center if I have trouble. What I learned so far relates to the present is that some strategies I never used or thought about. In the future, I’m going to use tutoring center or use the professor’s office time for any question I don’t understand. In conclusion, I learned so far is going to change the way I look at college. I understand now that college is no place to mess around. It’s a place where you chose what you want to do in the long…

My family and I had taken a trip to Mexico for Christmas and New Year’s vacation in 2009. My father decided that we should drive to Mexico instead of flying because it would be an experience to remember. I wasn’t too thrilled about being in the car for 2 days (36 hours) with my brother and sister because my sister can talk for hours and my brother snores so loud that no one can get sleep.…

Lying out in a cabana by the beach, overlooking the crystal clear, blue water and feeling the cool ocean breeze run through my hair. My imagination had taken over my mind, as my mother told my sisters and me that we were going to Cancun for our very first family vacation. I was thrilled to say the least; my joy had no boundaries as I expressed my excitement for this trip. I had never been on any vacation before so I was determined to make this one memorable. My only focus on this trip was to have an amazing time in Cancun. Never once did I expect to meet all the obstacles that came along with this trip: flight cancellations, long layovers, and a late arrival. However, good or bad, nothing was going to ruin this vacation for me and I was going to make this trip, one for the books.…

The wind caresses my hair around my face as I look down from the top of the swaying bridge over the Yuba River, ready to leap and never look back. I close my eye and feel a single hot tear slide down my goosebumped face. Everything seems to stop for just a moment, a single, beautiful moment where I feel like I can fly. Where I feel safe. Protected. But the moment always passes, and it flies away as quickly as it came.…

A polychrome of colours form in front of me, as I sit on this protruding grey rock. In front of me, thousands of gallons of water are free-falling from 100 meters, causing such a thunderous roar. This beautiful waterfall sits at the end of a winding river, and is encompassed by thick sturdy tress whose luscious canopy offers shade for any who despises the warm rays of sunlight. Along with the lush green foliage sporting different hues of green, the whole scene seemed right out of a postcard from paradise. Never in my life have I seen such a scene as breath-taking as this, the imposing waterfall caused such a roar that all but blocks the cacophony of forest creatures residing in the safety of their tree homes. Animals ranging from elephants to crickets let cried out. Around my rock, the water is moderately calm, illuminated by sunshine, I could see straight into the waist deep water, and admire the efflorescence of aquatic plants and corals. A school of tiny glittering fish darted hither and thither, enjoying their magnificent freedom.…
