INTRODUCTION
Software testing procedures traditionally follow systematic processes. Well executed processes can reduce financial and human resource intensity for software development. Surveying employees from thirty-one software development organizations, and qualitatively analyzing twelve companies as individual cases, this study discusses the limitations, difficulties, and improvement needs in software test automation for different types of organizations. This study identifies the source of discrepancy among demand and use of test automation tools.
RESEARCH FINDINGS
Seventy-four percent of surveyed organizations do not consistently use test automation. This statistic is unexpected since test automation tools are highly sought after - the third most common category of software test related tools. Several reasons exist for the lack of widespread use of test automation tools in software development organizations.
First, there are apparently few companies actively developing test automation tools, resulting in a lack of existing software repertoire. With few predecessors, organizations that choose to develop a test automation tool are largely on their own: they must allocate extensive resources for design and maintenance of the tool - rather than simply utilizing an existing tool.
Second, automated processes must be routinely executed elements of a software program. Highly deviated and conditional processes require more complicated coding. Complicated processes are also more difficult to maintain with regular updates required for new technological advances. Overworked programmers are simply not available for these additional workloads.
Third, hopeful developers seems to have uncertainty as to how to proceed with development: What should the... [continues]
