Summary of “How Socialists Built America”

In the article, “How Socialists Built America,” author John Nichols starts with saying that America was founded as a capitalist country and that socialism is a dangerous and foreign idea; even though we believe in the concept of free trade. Radio talk-show host Rush Limbaugh often says that taxing the wealthy in order to provide healthcare for children and the unemployed is completely against what the nation originally intended and that President Obama’s reforms are “destroying this country as it was founded.” John Nichols is making the argument that socialism is a heated word in politics that republicans use as a tool to belittle their democratic opponents and make them seem un-American. For example, Nichols frequently compares socialism to communism during the red scare. When offered proposals to organize a private healthcare system, President Obama showed little enthusiasm. Fox News’ Sean Hannity said that, “the constitution was shredded, thwarted, the rule of law was passed aside. Gingrich expressed that the Obama administration was “prepared to fundamentally violate the constitution” and that Obama is [in favor of] a left-wing secular socialist system.” Sarah Palin also raised concern of the rise of socialism when discussing it with Hannity. She had concerns of Obama’s proposal to develop a “system of universal building codes to promote energy efficiency.” Palin stated, “Our country could evolve into something that we do not even recognize, certainly that is so far from what the founders of our country had in mind for us.” Nichols then goes on to say that Palin was wrong about the risks of energy efficiency. He says that she was also wrong about President Obama being a socialist. Obama stated that he isn’t a socialist and even the United States’ most prominent socialists agree that he is indeed not one.
