Summary of El Filibustirismo
The novel opens with the steamship Tabo heading up the Pasig River on its way to La Laguna one December morning they meet Doña Victorina, the only lady in the European group on the upper deck she is accompanied by her niece, the beautiful and rich Paulita Gomez. Doña Victorina is the wife of Don Tiburcio de Espadaña, who left her after many years of marriage and who was now hiding in Laguna. In the lower deck of tabo, Basilio and Isagani converse with Don Basilio those two tell the Don to establish a Spanish academy, hoping that the Governor General will approve it. The wealthy passengers of the tabo amuse themselves by telling a story to other passenger. With his family and father they cultivate a land on where they plan a crop, tale’s wife and eldest daughter died when they ready to harvest the crop, and a religious order lays to claim the land and demand for annual rent. Tales accepted the rent but every year the rent in their land rise continuously, until tales go to the court for their claim in the land but after a long and expensive herring Tales has lose. Tales has unfortunately abducted by the bandits and demanding for a ransom, but Tales has not enough money to pay the ransom so his daughter makes way to borrow money to pay the ransom but as a payment she will work as a servant. In the way to the town of San Diego, a cochero endures abuse and maltreatment from the guardia civil his hit with a rifle butt when he tells that he forgot to bring his cedula with him, he is beaten up and detained again, Basilio arrives at San Diego and after making his way to captain Tiago’s house, he receives the news that Cabesang tales have abducted by the bandits. At christmas eve Basilio enter the forest which previously own by the Ibarra family but has been sold to Capitan Tiago.
