Suicide Among Teens
Suicides among teenagers are continuing to be a major problem. Every Year in the United States thousands of teenagers take away their lives. One in every twelve teenagers attempts to commit suicide annually. Suicide has now unfortunately become the third primary cause of death for fifteen to twenty four year olds. Teenagers may encounter strong feels of stress, confusion, pressure to succeed, and many other internal conflicts while in their childhood years. Some of the simplest things, such as breaking up with a boyfriend or a girlfriend may seem unimportant or small to some people, but for people with a disorder such as depression or bipolar disease it could take their lives.
The numbers have had a huge increase over the years. It’s becoming a major problem all over the world. People are killing themselves at such a young age that they aren’t able to experience their whole lives. We claim that we care about these people and no one is there to help them stop themselves from it. Not many people say,” I want to prevent teen suicide, I am going to donate money to help prevent this issue.’ We say things like this about cancer and AIDS. What about suicide? Ninety percent of teens that have committed suicide have in the least, one diagnosable, active psychiatric illness at the time of their death. Only thirty-three to fifty percent of them had mental illnesses that a doctor was informed of. Fifteen percent were in treatment at the time that they died.

Society has each one of us in our place. Our place often creates cliques. What is normal to one person may not be normal to another. Some people are willing to share their opinions on things, and others aren’t. Some cliques become very well known because the society views them as normal. Adolescences, especially those who have disorders, might feel disappointment or rejection. They do not handle this very well. It many cases these people cannot handle it. They see that everything that goes wrong is their fault

Untreated depression and other mental disorders are a key component to teen suicides. Depression, especially, can be triggered by several events in a teenager’s life such as problems at home, breaking up with a boyfriend or girlfriend, and dealing with sexual identity (Will). Maureen Underwood, a social worker who has written suicide prevention school curricula and who works with the Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide, states these “triggering events could push someone off the edge” (Harpaz). Unlike adults, who have the capacity and skills to overcome such obstacles, teenagers have not reached the level to do so. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, at least 90 percent of people who kill themselves have a diagnosable and treatable psychiatric illness (“AFSP: Risk Factors”). Therefore, the awareness of student’s actions and emotions by parents, teachers, and other adults are imperative.…

Adolescent suicide has become an epidemic, attempted suicide is even a greater epidemic. “For every adolescent who commits suicide, four hundred teens report attempting suicide, one hundred report requiring medical attention for a suicide attempt, and thirty are hospitalized for a suicide attempt” (David M. Cutler, 2001). Each year in the United States, thousands of adolescents commit suicide. Often times, as shown through many sources and thorough studies, suicide is caused by many reasons, such as, depression, bullying, drugs, and alcohol.…

This startling fact shows that teen suicide is becoming a major issue in the United States, and makes one wonder what is causing our teenagers to become suicidal. Today, many teenagers have thoughts about death every day, and many teenagers have a tendency to get depressed easily, and this is where suicide often is the “easy way out”. But suicide attempts are often also just a cry for help, because studies show that many teens who have died by suicide have done up to 25 suicide attempts before “finally” taking their own life. 1 Many teenagers often use suicide attempts to cry for help. Many often just take just the “right” amount of pills to get in the hospital, but not enough to so it becomes deadly, and this is can get very dangerous.…

For people aged 10-14, suicide was the third leading cause of death within the United States. Also, suicide was the second leading cause of death for the age groups, 15-24 and 25-34 (CDC, 2015). Additionally, there were more suicides in 2013 compared to 2005 within the age gap 15-34 (CDC, 2005, 2013). The prevalence of suicide within this age group is very alarming. The fact that younger people are more likely to commit suicide than the rest of the age groups should be a red flag for public health officials. Interestingly enough, in 2013, suicide was promoted to the second leading cause of death in the age group 15-24, as compared to the third leading cause of death in that age group for years prior (CDC, 2010,…
