Sugar Study

Experimental Method: Does a large amount of sugar affect attention in small children?!
Independent Variable: Amount of sugar given to children!
Dependent Variable: Children’s attention!

!

In a class of 20 kids (average age of 7), 5 kids get 25 grams of sugar, 5 kids get 35 grams of sugar, 5 kids get 45 grams of sugar, and 5 kids don’t get any (the control).!
20 minutes after consumption, all of the children take a long yet simple math test. Record who is still paying attention to the test after 5 minutes, 10 minutes, and 15 minutes.!

!
!

Survey Method:!
Ask every other parent (in an alphabetical list) of all third-grade classes, !
!
-“How much sugar does your child consume on a daily basis?”!
!
-“Would you describe your child as calm and withdrawn, or hyperactive and outgoing?”!
!
-“Does your child behave similarly before having sugar and after having sugar? I.E. doing chores?”!

!
!

Research on how sugar affects kids could be used by either the experimental method, or by the survey method. Each method has their pro’s and con’s. The pro’s of the experimental method are that it’s unbiased, and you can directly observe the children, how much sugar they have and when they start to lose focus. The con’s are it’s not 100% perfect; external factors come into play (if the child is sick, if they already had sugar, if they already have trouble focusing, etc.) The survey method has pro’s like it’s easier to perform, more time efficient, and the like. The con’s are that the direct sugar amount vs. attention isn’t observed. In this case, the experimental method would be better for more accurate and unbiased results!

From the 2 sources that were used for this research, it shows that when you eat too much sugar, your behavior changes. According the first article “Sweet Obsession; The Body Of Evidence Exonerates Sugar,” “When kids eat a lot of sugar, they're likely to develop nutritional deficiencies, and those in turn can cause a problem in their concentration and mental function” (Proulx, Lawrence G. 1995). This means that when kids eat sugar, their behavior and actions change to not normal. From this article, Proulx states that the so called sugar buzz doesn't make you crazy, it makes you very tired (Proulx, Lawrence G. 1995). This states that eating too much sugar changes your behavior. It make you crazy, or it could…

The purpose of the lab is to find how much sugar is in a potato. I have found that my hypothesis “If I change the amount of sucrose in the solution, then percent change will be a negative percent and show me how much sugar is in a potato which is about 0.5g of sugar because increasing sucrose solutions outside the cell creates a hypertonic solution or hypotonic cell and the water inside the potato will go to the sugar outside the potato.” was proven wrong from the graph of my data which showed with a line that falls on zero that that is where it is isotonic and that is how much sugar is in the potato.…

Diabetes used to be a problem for the older education but now due to the increase of sugar in our diets has become an issue for all ages. Data collection procedures are appropriate and very important for this study because it is the procedures that will be used based on the type of survey that was taken also based on the age group surveyed for pertinent information involving the research process. The appropriateness of the data collection procedures is based upon the eating habits of the children; the survey demonstrates that the children with poor eating habits are the children who also suffer from childhood obesity and have problems with their weight (Hooker, 2010).…

Glucose is one of the few chemical constituents of the blood that can change noticeably in its concentration. Many diseases cause a change in glucose metabolism but the most frequent cause of an increase in blood glucose is diabetes mellitus. The early detection of diabetes is important to avoid the many complications of the disease. The glucose tolerance test commonly done by recommended level for adults of a 75 g glucose drink to be consumed within a 5 min time period. The timing begins when the drink has been consumed. This test is known as the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). For these reasons, the physician may request an OGTT. Normally when the body receives such a dose, the pancreas responds by excreting insulin necessary for metabolism of the glucose. The degree and timing of the rising and falling of the glucose concentration measures the ability of a person to respond appropriately to a heavy load of glucose.…
