Genocide in Darfur
Imagine living in a country where you have only had 11 years of peace since your day of independence 54 years ago.   If you lived in Sudan, you wouldn’t have to imagine it. The people of Sudan are in trouble. The “ethnic cleansing”, or genocide, going on there has already killed millions of people. And it’s not stopping. Darfur has one of the worst cases of the genocide, killing 70,000 people in 6 months.   (Russell Smith, BBC news) Human Rights, Justice, and Security are some of the many things the people in Darfur need to have peace once again.
Since 2003 Darfuri rebel militias, the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) and Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), have been launching attacks on their government because they want basic Human Rights (and they wanted to end the 30-year civil war between north and south Sudan). When the attacks occurred, the government fought back. They started wiping out the suppliers of the militias so they wouldn’t have any more attacks.
All the people wanted was justice. They didn’t want to be ignored anymore. The Sudanese wanted peace and they were sick of waiting. However, they wanted peace with people of the same ethnicity. The Muslims were rebelling against the government because they wanted everyone to be equal with their religion and way of life. And the government wasn’t listening to them.
The security and safety of Darfur is horrific. It is virtually inexistent. Thousands are being killed and the president, Omar al-Bashir, is ignoring their cry for help. Darfur needs sustainable peace (saveDarfur). Villages are being wiped out because of ethnic cleansing/no security and we can’t just sit by and watch.
The president of Sudan needs to be impeached. The people of Darfur/Sudan need Human Rights, Justice, and Security in order to gain peace once more. Genocide is a major issue and we need to take as much action as possible to help stop and prevent it.
