In order to be an effective manager, one needs to build a foundation in order to be successful. An effective manager pays attention to many facets of management, leadership, and learning within the organization. It is important for a manger to be a person that others want to follow. In this essay, I will outline what I feel are important aspects in a successful foundation for a management career.

Firstly, in order to be successful as a manger I will need to build effective interpersonal relationships and have effective communication. I feel that communication is the most important aspect of being a successful manager and goes hand-in-hand with interpersonal relationships. Interpersonal relationships and communication constitute a large part of the manager’s job and helps to build trust and respect and accomplish goals. Communication between managers and employees is a two-way street. It is important that managers have empathy and are able to put themselves in their employees place. Managers should consider their employee’s needs, interests, and attitudes. Messages and comments should be expressed in a language properly suited to the listener and should never be expressed in a way that talks down to the employee. Since communication is a two-way street, it is important that managers are effective listeners also. They should pay attention to what their employee is saying. They should be patient to encourage the individual to communicate fully. They should also be willing to compromise. It is also important to have an open-door policy. This encourages employees to be able to come and express their concerns regarding problems, fears, or rumors that are going around. One-on-one relationships with employees are critical as it not only represents you as a manager, but also reflects on the organization as a whole.
