Diabetes Mellitus is a major health problem in developed countries and figures among the 10 leading causes of death according to WHO (2000), at least 171 million people suffer from diabetes worldwide and this number is estimated to double by 2030.

For at least 20years, diabetes rates in North America have been increasing substantially. In Australia, there were an estimated 700,000 people with diabetes in 1995 of which at least half were unaware they had the condition.

In 2008, there were about 24 million people with Diabetes in the US alone, from these 5.7 million people remain undiagnosed and other 57 million people are estimated to have pre-diabetes. In the second edition of the International Diabetes Mellitus Federation Diabetes Atlas, it is estimated that 194 million had diabetes in the year 2003 and about 2/3 of these people lived in developing countries.
