             Subway is a seventeen-year-old entrepreneur that dates back to 1965. Fred Deluca was out looking to become a doctor. He was not very rich and could not pay for the education required to pay for his schooling. So a friend suggested that he open up a submarine sandwich shop. His friend- Dr. Pete Buck- then gave in him a loan of $1,000, and with that they became partners in what is today the biggest franchise. The first store was opened in Bridgeport, Connecticut in August, 1965. Their goal was to have 32 stores opened in 10 years. By 1974 the two friends had 16 submarine stores sandwich shops throughout Connecticut. Realizing they would not reach their goal of 32 stores they decided to franchise it out. Today subway is the world’s largest submarine sandwich shop chain with more than 34,000 locations around the world. They are the leading choice to people that want a quick nutritious meal that everyone will enjoy.
            Subway has come a long way since their first sandwich shop in 1965. According to the Entrepreneur Magazine of 2010, they are ranked number one for franchise opportunities. It is the seventeenth time that subway has been ranked with top honors. Subway has more than 32,000 locations in 90 different countries. It is on the right tracks in becoming the world’s single largest restaurant brand, in terms of location. They also have been selected number one by consumers in the most popular, top service and healthy options categories of the recently released 2010 Zagat Fast-Food survey for two consecutive years.
           
In addition Subway has done many things to help the society. One that stands out is its “Going Green” campaign. They are doing their part to save energy and help protect the environment. They are helping to promote the Energy Star light and their goal it to reach 999 pledges. They first subway eco-store opened November 9, 2007 in Kissimmee, FL.
