Through character’s thoughts, the authors were able to capture differing moods, while through character’s actions, the authors were able to capture similar moods. The distinction between which moods were conveyed and which were not is evident through the techniques used. Character’s thoughts use language to convey the mood, and language can have many different interpretations and meanings, which provides explanation of why the moods felt through the same technique were different. On the other hand, character’s actions use events to convey the mood which can be seen as a more direct technique, which also provides explanation of why the moods felt in the two works were similar. These examples of mood provide reasoning of why it is always important to consider not only what the mood itself is but how the mood is conveyed. Mood allows the work to become personal to the audience, which is a unique trait that few other literary devices are able to…
Both 8th grade classes have recently finished the book “Into the Mouth of the Cat”. So at this point, you may not know what the book is about, so that’s what we are going to talk about. Lance Peter Sijan; does this name sound familiar to you? Probably not, since he died nearly 50 years ago. Lance happens to be a ‘Medal of Honor’ recipient which is the highest award you could receive in the United States military. He was captured in the Vietnam war when he suddenly crash landed which left him stranded for 46 days until he was taken to a NVA camp. You see, there is a lot to know about Lance Sijan. After finishing the book, I realized that I actually knew a lot about him to the point where it felt like I knew him. Since you’ll probably read “Into the Mouth of the Cat”, I’m going to tell you a little bit…
The author has achieved the purpose of this novel. The text is conveyed effectively to the reader. The colloquial style contains a tone that varies between disgust and bitterness; which strongly enhances our understanding of the novel. The narrative structure is presented as a flashback; requiring the reader to interpret the text based on their knowledge. The writing techniques are also used cleverly. The author describes the man characters psychological breakdown indirectly, yet the reader still recognises the breakdown. This is because the author uses two distinctive writing techniques.…
Even though to be in conflict with society and especially its values and beliefs isn’t easy for many authors to do, Ernest Hemingway breaks out this idea in order to give the reader a deep and provoking novel, mixed with unusual themes for that time in the way they were depicted, like alcoholism and expatriation.…
This literature was confusing however, conceptually understandable that even though this short story was written somewhere between the life-time of Ernest Hemingway. People can relate to it in someway and the style of how it is written is something it could be said to be artistic and educational that people can learn from. As this textbook was dedicated for the purpose of learning literature, it was appropriate for using this literature in the book; So that people could debate, discuss the very meaning of the contents and…
3. Though the story contains strong emotional conflict, it is entirely without adverbs to indicate tone. How does Hemingway indicate tone? At what points are the characters insincere? Ironic or sarcastic? Do they give open expression to their feelings? Do either want an open conflict? Why? Trace the various phases of emotion in the girl.…
Imagery is one of Hemingway's most effective tools in conveying the central meaning of the story, "Hills Like White Elephants". His vivid language and articulate descriptions of the scenery…
Ernest Hemingway’s writing typically took place throughout the World War II era. His works are bleak and dismal, and describe that undertone well. Hemingway was not a very cheerful person, but puts on a good, brave face for everyone. He wrote more than a few short stories about war, all the stories having the same type theme of soldier’s struggle to fit back into society that does not understand what the soldier’s have gone through while away. Many critics believe that these stories are based on his life experiences, but are fictional stories. The emotions that are in the stories can seem real to the readers. He went through a lot of tragedies in his life. In many of his short stories they begin from his childhood to a grown…
In the short story “Hills Like White Elephants” through the objective third person point of view Hemingway used symbolism to help the reader grasp the complexity of the young couple’s deciton. Through symbols such as white elephants the reader is able to better identify the conflict between Jig and the American regarding their unborn child. The landscape presents the reader with the option available to the couple, whether to keep the baby or not; a moment of transition in the couples lives captured by the train station. The objective third person point of view imposes a script like story telling that places importance on the symbols as a guide to help the reader to more clearly grasp the young couple’s complex…
Analyzing literature can be achieved in many different ways and it should help the read gather a better understanding of the piece. The pieces of literature that I want to examine further are “The Swimmer” and “Prisoner on Hell Planet”. Both of these short stories contain similar and not so similar elements of literature. After reading these stories I gathered that it would be best to compare and contrast the following elements of literature; writing style, mood, and symbolism. Analyzing these aspects of literature should help me gain a better understanding of both short stories and hopeful other stories that I read in the future. To begin my examination of each story, I thought it would be best to look at each of the authors and their writing style in greater depth first.…
Many things which are generally touched on within a story are hardly in this one. One strange aspect is that the theme does not stand out as strongly as others. The author gives no description of the characters in a physical aspect. Generally, the reader is provided with a unique personality trait or physical classification of a character, which there is none of. Even a small outline of the character’s past is absent, throwing the reader into the middle of the story. Hemingway portrays “the man” to have an abnormally calm and…

People always say that Hemingway was a simple writer. People like Harry Levin, who pointed out the “biggest weakness of Hemingway’s writing is the lack of complex syntax and diction, but Hemingway must be praised for his ability to convey action”, which, while it may be somewhat true, does not take away from the overall quality of his work. Hemingway didn’t need big words or complex dialogue in order to create his masterpieces; he only needed a character, a boat, and a fish in order to write one of the most well thought out and eloquent pieces of literature that has ever been written. There are many people who simply look at the obvious; the man, the boat, the fish, the sea, but many fail to realize that there is so much symbolism wrapped up…
