As Korean is language number six for me, I feel I’ve come a long way in mapping out the exact learning strategy that works best. I’m going to wait until this entire project is finished to do a complete summary of that method, but I’ll share some of the methods I found very helpful in China and plan to transfer to learning Korean. My goal for Korean in three months is still an ambitious one: be able to read simple writing and hold conversations about most everyday topics. This is a slightly lower bar than my Chinese, and because I believe I surpassed the bar for Chinese in being able to have a greater conversational range than I had previously imagined, I think it is possible to do the same with Korean.
As always, I see this initial period, not as an end to my learning, but as a beginning. I still believe that, even with these time restrictions, I’ll get to a level of Korean where continued study and immersion in Canada is enjoyable, and therefore I can steadily improve my Korean over time without strain.
Finally, I hope that this experience might give me more information for how to translate the methods I used in Chinese to a language learner who is under more significant time constraints than I have worked under. I know that my obsessive learning quests can paint unrealistic standards for a typical learner, so I always try to be aware of what methods are feasible for learners in more typical situations.Tutoring sessions which consist of just trying to have conversations blur the line between immersion and studying. Indeed, in all of the countries we’ve traveled to, we became friends with our tutors and often did things outside of class, spending time discussing things outside the classroom that we previously discussed inside of it.
However, I’m arbitrarily deciding paid tutoring counts in the “studying” category and unpaid, informal conversations count as “immersion”. Mostly this is because, in the beginning stages of language learning, having conversations with tutors really is studying. Later it requires little effort and can be a fun activity instead of a drain on your energy

I asked Santa for books and I spoke English everywhere I went, but as I learned more and more English, I remembered less and less Korean. One day after school in second grade, my mom greeted me with the usual “What did you learn today?” I wanted to say that we started memorizing our multiplication tables, but I realized that I didn’t know how to say “multiplication tables” or “memorize” in Korean, so I shrugged and said “Nothing.” This became a regular…

Besides this, listening to other people’s conversation was another useful way to learn, where I would try to understand them while also observing, how and what to say in a situation. So whenever I got chance, I would hear other people conversing in a market place, doctor’s clinic, at the school bus stop where I used to drop and pick up my 5 yrs. old nephew. Also, I would converse a little with my nephew without any hesitation and whenever I got time, would read local newspapers and magazines.…

Chinese people say: 學習是永遠跟隨主人的寶物 - Learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere. There is no limit in learning, as it makes the mind and the heart wealthier. At the beginning always comes the learning of a language, which is a road map of a culture. It will tell where people come from and where they will go. My dream and my goal is to keep learning and to lead others up the path of learning. Korean language and culture is indeed a treasury of wisdom, which combines the principles of Asian ancient philosophy with modern perspective on daily life. I would like to draw my attention on the studies of Korean language and culture in order to convey this knowledge to the speakers of other languages, facilitate the globalization of Korean education, aim multi-cultural Korean society, and to be able to design creative and flexible understanding of Korean culture. Since I started studying Chinese, I observed the way in which it spread throughout East Asia influencing written and spoken languages in the countries like Korea, Japan, Vietnam etc. I did more research to discover occasional analogies between these languages, and found out that they occasionally share same root, bear same meaning, and are phonetically related to each other. It thrilled me to know that I can base my further linguistic endeavor on the knowledge of Mandarin, Chinese characters and oriental mindset. I believe this invaluable experience will contribute to my teaching method and help me foster the concept of a multi-cultural society among my students. Although I do not possess a rich academic background in Korean studies, I read the books by Andrei Lankov, a Russian scholar of Asia and a specialist in Korean studies, and came across many different forms of South Korea art and popular culture. The aspects of traditional Korean culture such as folk dance, traditional…

When reading the book Essentials for Successful English Language Teaching by Farrell, T. S.C., & Jacobs, G., I am really impressed with chapter 4 Integrated Curricular especially the classroom implications part. It reflects the fact that language teaching should have the connection with other subjects in the curricular as well as learner’s needs and experience in order to motivate and engage students into the learning process. This is a good way to encourage the students to learn English efficiently and independently since teachers should devise ways to help their students apply English into everyday life. As an English teacher, I always inspire my students to the new ways of learning such as dictation running, vocabulary guessing, board hitting, field trip writing, and so on which can give as much help as possible to those who really want to enrich their knowledge through English. By using the term “enrich their knowledge through English”, I mean that English is not just a mandatory subject that students have to learn structures and vocabularies; it also provides a wide range of findings and knowledge related to different fields. And chapter 4 in the said book indicates just what I need since I applied these ways of teaching to my communication skills classrooms. However, I have some concern regarding the possibility of applying this method to all levels in Vietnam or just English majors and students studying communication skills?…
