In Australia, when a change to the food laws, food additives or novel ingredients is required, a submission is made to the government regulatory authority, Food Standards Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ). This submission generally comprises of a review of the literature, giving the background to this change, comparing this change with the situation in other countries, and reviewing the literature for possible adverse affects on humans. Submissions are generally made by a company wishing to change the food laws, and they present evidence to support their claim that this addition is safe, and poses no threat to the health of the population. The submission is then open to public comment where other interested parties might refute the evidence and present a different case.…

Literature pertaining to entrepreneurial women is very limited. There are numerous books that depict the lives of wage-earning women in Canada; however works on self-employed women are uncommon. The Business of Women- Marriage, Family, and Entrepreneurship in British Columbia, 1901-1951, was written by Melanie Buddle in 2010, under UBC Press. In The Business of Women, Buddle attempts to highlight the key features of entrepreneurial women in the 1900’s in Western Canada, exploring how and why women entered the business world. In this book, Buddle examines case studies and primary documents in order to expose the world of female entrepreneurs. Buddle focuses on issues of gender and class relations that influenced the ability of women to become self-employed. Although the information presented in this book represent the period of 1901 to 1951, I will attempt to draw connections, through the use of a summary and analysis, between the materials presented in this book to 21st century businesswomen.…

The business is a local business. She chose to operate this way because she likes to keep her shop family oriented and close to what she considers a busy part of the city. As I interviewed Francette I asked her, out of all things she could have gotten into for business why choose this? Well to my knowledge she had the response that I would have had if someone were to ask me the very same question. Since she was a young girl she has always had the desire to be a hair stylist. She used to have little baby dolls and would do their hair, she also has a younger sister that when they were younger, experiment in her hair also. So this was something that she always wanted to do. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of cultural intelligence (CQ) in establishing multinational teams and its association with team effectiveness. A sample of employees from two reputed companies in the UAE, HSBC Bank and Petrofac were surveyed with respect to their cultural intelligence and the effectiveness of their teams. The relation between Cultural Intelligence (measured as CQ) and team effectiveness was determined using Pearson’s coefficient analysis. Our findings suggest that CQ has an impact on the performance level of teams. The higher the CQ, the more adjusting are the team members. Thus, this would contribute to the success of the teams. This paper also concludes by suggesting some measures by which team effectiveness and cultural intelligence could be improved.…

Academic experiences designed to promote active learning can be thrilling and memorable educational opportunities for students and their instructors. Unfortunately, they can also be miserable failures for students lacking necessary skills and motivation, and for instructors lacking necessary resources and support. This paper describes two active learning projects, both successful in many ways, and draws from them observations and lessons on the failings of active education for some students, and the burdens placed on instructors. Experiential learning is not a new concept. Originally derived from apprenticeship programs, experiential learning strives to give students the opportunity to put into practice the theories they learn in the classroom. Proponents are quick to point out that active learning goes beyond memorization and requires students to become engaged in the process. This leads to deeper understanding and longer retention. Moreover, research indicates that student satisfaction is greater when the classroom environment encourages student involvement. Business schools have particularly embraced experiential learning. The new American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) curriculum guidelines (1993) stress the importance of providing students with the necessary competencies or skills to be successful businesspeople. As a result, experiential or “hands-on” activities have become an integral part of undergraduate education. Many instructors work extensively to incorporate as many active learning experiences as possible into their classes. Employers use them as criteria for selecting graduates. Universities use them as a recruitment tool. For the most part, experiential learning has provided many positive outcomes for students and faculty.…

The transfer or selling of state owned assets to the private sector or owners have brought an added advantage to several entrepreneurs within different industries. Governments reduce the level of competition between the private and public owned businesses by removing or reducing statutory restrictions (Sheshinski and López-Calva, 2010). This has since been implemented by governments after the initiative by the international finance community. The community pushed for this under the structural adjustment programs and the community includes players such as the World Bank and others (Addison, T. and L.
