THE EFFECT OF EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTlVlTlES ON ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT An abstract of a Thesis by James W. O'Dea May 1994 Drake University Advisor: Michael Johnson The problem. Is there a difference in the grade point average between students who participate in extracurricular activities and those who do not participate? Procedure. Four hundred twenty-four seniors at Valley High School in West Des Moines, Iowa made up the study group. Each senior completed the Fall Senior Information Sheet which gathered information about their participation in extracurricular activities. The grade point averages were obtained from office records. Specific criteria were developed to establish a group of involved students and a group of those not involved in extracurricular activities. The difference between groups was statistically analyzed using a ttest. Findinas. The probability of the t-test was less than 0.000499. A significance level of 0.01 was established for this study. Condusions. 'There is a significant difference between the grade point averages of those involved in extracurricular activities and those not involved in extracurricuiar activities. ABSTRACT The main objective of this study is to investigate students’ intrinsic and extrinsic motivations and the benefits accrued in participating in compulsory extra-curriculum activities. Secondly, the study examines the implications of these after-school activities towards students’ academic performances. The study employed a qualitative interview approach with 15 university students who during their time in high school education had been involved in extra-curriculum activities. The investigators approached students who were involved in extra-curriculum activities and invited them to participate in the study. An informed consent letter was signed by the respondents before the interviews took place and each of the interviews was tape-recorded. Each of the interviews was consequently transcribed and the researchers conducted content analyses of the collective whole. Results suggested that most of the students participated in after-school programs because of their interest in gaining new knowledge and for reasons of self-improvement, which they argued emerged from their own interests. It was also apparent from the study that although extra-curriculum activities are compulsory, for this sample of students their involvement came about in the main because of their own intrinsic interest (integrated regulation). These findings notwithstanding, two other important factors emerged from the study, which suggested that socializing with friends and developing a leadership role were key to the students’ participation in extracurriculum activities.
