CHAPTER I
Problem and Its Setting

Introduction
Education plays a vital role in the development of a learner. The acquisition of new knowledge, information and the way one responds to the learning environment makes him a holistic learner. It must be uncalculated in our minds that one of the purposes of education is to train learners on how to formulate solutions to problems, how to grow independently, how to apply what they learned inside the classroom in their real life situations, and how to understand things and make them useful to one’s life. You cannot learn simply by being told what to do or by watching others, you have to practice and practice frequently. Successful students employ time management systems to create study patterns that work and use active learning methods to add meaning and interest to their study time and maintaining their motivation by connecting reasons for study to their life goals and values. Learners must develop and established good study habits in doing school work, which can raised their academic performance. High educational achievement attained by the learners in school is the primary objective of education. It cannot be achieved in a split second or snap of a finger. Many school learners fail in their studies due to their inability to cope with the daily obstacles and demands in schools. Effective study skills are about more than understanding and it must be practiced in order to improve and also enable to students to work privately. It is not enough to simply “think about” studying. There is saying, goes like this: “Practice makes perfect; perfect practice makes perfect. Effective study habits gradually acquired by learners will be their sole weapon and strong assurance that they can successful through the obstacles of education, making them equipped with knowledge, skills and ability to practice what they know inside the classroom with accuracy, ease and confidence. The extent of student’s learning in academics may be determined by the grades a student earns for a period of learning has been done. It is believed that a grade is a primary indicator of such learning. If a learner earns high grades it is concluded that they may also have learned a lot while low grades indicate lesser learning. However, many experiences and studies found out that there are also several factors that would account for the grades. No single factor can be definitely pointed out as predicting grades. It has been interplay of so many factors – gender, IQ, study habits, age, year level, parent’s educational attainment, social status, number of siblings, birth order, etc. In fact, almost all of existing environmental and personal factors are a variable of academic performance. However, at this point in time, the researchers would like to determine the possible relationship of study habits to the academic achievement of Bachelor of Elementary Education students in Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology.

Statement of the problem
This study intended to find out the factors affecting the study habits of undergraduate –Bachelor of Elementary students in Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology. Specifically, it aims to answer the following:

1. What is the profile of the respondents according to: 1.1 Time management
1.2 Learning Skills
1.3 Study Skills
2. What extent of influence did the independent variables have on students study habits? 3. Did the independent variables significantly influence students study habits?  
4. What are the implications of this study to the following: 4.1 Students;
4.2 Teachers;
4.3 Parents;
4.4 School Administrator and;
4.5 Researchers?

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

This study deals with the factors associated the study habits on the academic achievement of Bachelor of Elementary Education students in Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology.
