Purpose Statement

The purpose of this tradeshow is to bring Johnson & Wales students together to celebrate love and promote healthy relationship behaviors. This fair, featuring a variety of local businesses, and organizations from chocolate vendors to palm readers, is intended for all students, regardless of relationship status.

Students who are in relationships will find relevant vendors to help them find gifts for their significant others and improve upon their relationships on one side of the venue space, dubbed “Love Struck.” On the other side, “Love Stuck, ” students who are not in relationships will find other vendors including sexual health information, psychic services, self-empowerment resources and more. Students will be encouraged to visit vendors on both sides.

The trade show will also highlight and raise funds for the local non-profit, Sojourner House, whose mission is to provide culturally sensitive support, advocacy, safety and respect for victims of domestic abuse and to effect systems change. All proceed from raffle sales and admission fees will be donated. Money raised will directly support Sojourner House’s teen dating violence prevention programming.

"True Love" is an attempt at finding answers to the ever-elusive questions its namesake inherently poses. Lauren Slater, faced with the apparent absence of a romantic spark in an otherwise happy marriage, investigates into the proverbial heart of the matter, asking questions and providing data as well as highlighting some popular beliefs on the origins of love and why passion rarely lasts. She then goes on to provide suggestions on how to reignite the romantic spark in any growingly bland relationship. All the while, she relates anecdotes, somehow both joyful and melancholy in nature, from her own marriage to…

Good Morning everyone and welcome to the seminar 'Ensuring a Successful Relationship' and I am here to tell you just that. Today we will be discussing how young people establish a relationship, the roles men and women play in an ancient and modern relationships and obstacles they face in these scenarios. As my example for the 'ancient' relationship I will be using the Shakespearean play ' A Mid-summer Nights Dream' and for the 'Modern' relationship I will be drawing my conclusions from the portrayal of love and romance in popular culture. I choose these examples because they both show different ideals of 'love' and relationships.…

“Against Love”: immediately controversy is conveyed by the title of Laura Kipnis’ article on modern relationships. The reader is put on the defensive as Kipnis starts her argument with strong metaphors attacking one of the most basic human interactions that we see as natural and embrace without question. Namely, love, a word held in superposition between complex and simple. Kipnis argues it has been overrated and too much is sacrificed in the pursuit of making it last. Defining her own terms that apply to most relationships such as “advanced intimacy” and “mutuality” she provides a new perspective on old notions. Her tone throughout is consistently sarcastic but make no mistake, Kipnis is addressing a real issue on what we value as a society. Descriptive language is Kipnis’ fishing line that keeps you reading, often creating vivid and objectionable images that no one can avoid cringing at. Concepts surrounding love and the ideal couple change from age to age and from culture to culture but Kipnis doesn’t disregard this. She compares today’s norms to historical precedence as she identifies the shift from focusing on the convenience of financially organized marriages to the achievement of unending life-long love. Kipnis’ article presents a fascinating argument by proposing an idea…

One theory of the formation of a romantic relationship is one put forward by Byrne and Clore called the reward/need satisfaction model. They suggested that we have relationships long term because we find them rewarding, or we don’t like the prospect of being alone. The rewards from a partner can include friendship, love and sex, or the particular person is associated with pleasant situations so then we want to spend time with them and form a romantic relationship. This can also include the satisfaction from a relationship with a person of high social status, as it would make you look good to other people. These needs can differ from person to person as to what is important. Rusbolt and Van Lange argue that rewards are important as when you do not know someone well communication can start on a ‘tit-for-tat’ basis with favours that can lead to more conversation and rewards. This was called by Clark and Mills and ‘exchange relationship’ as a relationship like this goes on it can turn to a ‘Communal relationship’ where rewards are given as a result of concern for a partner which can be an important aspect of forming a close relationship. May and Hamilton tested the good association part of the theory by getting groups of female students to look at pictures of male students and say if they like the look of them or not. One group looked at the pictures while pleasant music was being played, another group looked while unpleasant music was being played and a control group looked with no music. As predicted the group with pleasant music rated the male students the highest.…
