Strategic Management Process Paper
Strategic management has an inextricable role in the highly competitive business environment. An organization either small or large need to create systematic ways of studying the business environment through the process of environmental scanning—both external and internal, evaluating strengths, and weaknesses, and identifying opportunities with the ability to quickly execute to maintain success. This week’s paper will provide data to the primary components of a strategic management process, and introduce a strategic management process for McDonald’s Corporation. According to Smallbusiness.chron.com (2012), “The strategic management process is more than just a set of rules to follow. It is a philosophical approach to business. Upper management must think strategically first, then apply that thought to a process. The strategic management process is best implemented when everyone within the business understands the strategy. The five stages of the process are goal-setting, analysis, strategy formation, strategy implementation, and strategy monitoring” (The Four Stages of the Strategic Management Process, para. 1).
The strategic management process comprises many elements: company’s objectives, and strategies, an environmental analysis, SWOTT analysis, formulation, and implementation, and evaluation. Strategic management primary purpose is to help an organization strategize its long-term performance. An organization that implements this strategy as opposed to an organization that does not, have a clear advantage. Strategic management gives an organization a clearer strategic vision and a more accurate comprehension of the changing business environment (Wheeler & Hunger, 2010).

After reading chapter nine about strategic management I have found out that it is a key component of an organization. Many objectives have to be kept in mind when implementing strategic management such as understanding that both planning and designing a strategy involves a great amount of risk and resource assessment, the ways to counter the risks, and obtain effective utilization of resources all while trying to achieve a significant purpose. Organizations are normally established with a goal in mind, which defines the purpose for its existence. All of the work carried out by the organization revolves around this particular goal, and it has to align its internal resources and external environment in a way that the goal is achieved in rational expected time. There are many components of a strategic management process, but there are four main elements. According to Wheelen and Hunger, “strategic management consists of four basic elements: environment scanning, strategy formulation, strategy implementation, evaluation and control” (2010). Environmental scanning is a broad look at things that pertain to the company. Many companies will do a SWOT analysis by analyzing the company’s strengths and the opportunities that the company has and then look at the company’s weaknesses and threats. This information is then distributed to the appropriate individuals for strategy formulation. According to Wheelen and Hunger, “strategy formulation is the development of long-range plans for the effective management of environmental opportunities and threats, in light of corporate strengths and weaknesses (SWOT). It includes defining the corporate mission, specifying achievable objectives, developing strategies, and setting policy guidelines” (2010). Once strategies are formulated, the strategies are implemented. Strategy implementation is putting the strategies into effect by establishing the programs and procedures required to accomplish the tasks. The last element of strategic management is evaluation and control. When a strategy has been implemented, the strategy needs to be evaluated in order to understand if the strategy is accomplishing what it was put in place to do. Sometimes the strategy needs to be adjusted based on the outcome findings and continued monitoring until the strategy performs satisfactorily. All of the components of a strategic management process work together to achieve a desired outcome. An organization needs to have a strategic management process in order to stay competitive and be able to have plans in place to achieve the overall goals of the…
