Chapter One: Background
Production of crafts in Bangladesh is a long-standing tradition that has turned into a profitable business, benefiting vast numbers of producers, retailers and exporters throughout the country. The Crafts-for-Export sector alone is thought to involve 120,000 producers directly and another 200,000 suppliers of raw and semi-processed materials indirectly. The most popular exported craft include basketry; Jute diversified products, rugs and mats. In 2007, the export volume of basketry and Jute-diversified products was about 6.5 million and 8 million USD respectively, with a 20% growth rate expected to continue into the future.
As economies in other craft-producing countries such as China, the Philippines and Vietnam shift to more industrialized methods... [continues]
