Straight Edge, the lifestyle, the commitment, the honor, these are the basic followings of the new movement called Straight Edge. The beliefs of Straight Edge seem impossible for the youth today with all the struggles of peer pressure. It seems “typical” for a teenager in high school to experiment with drinking and smoking. With Straight Edge, it is a commitment that you will not drink or smoke of any kind. Straight Edge is a subculture of hardcore punk. (Sutherland 1) It was originated by a hardcore punk band in the 1980’s called Minor Threat. In the song “Straight Edge” which Minor Threat had made in the late 1970’s early 1980’s preaching about the Straight Edge ways. Straight Edge simply is the philosophy of staying clean and sober: meaning refraining from the use of alcohol, tobacco, and any other drugs for the means to get high. For some, this extends to not engaging in promiscuous sex, following a vegetarian or vegan diet, and not using caffeine or prescription drugs. (Sutherland 1) Straight Edge is a lifestyle centered on personal growth and well being, and showing with friends and family there is no need for the bad habits of these modern cultures. (Hebdige 1) Throughout the years Straight Edge has grown positively and also negatively. In the mid 1980’s also known as the Youth Crew era, the influence of music on the Straight Edge scene seemed to be at its highest. The ideas and believes seemed to become voiced through songs in bands that follow the Straight Edge movement. Starting in the mid 1980’s, the band Youth of Today became associated with the Straight Edge movement, and their song “Youth Crew” expressed a desire to unite the scene into a movement. (Haenfler 11) In the Youth Crew era there was a big association with Straight Edge and intermingling vegetarianism. In 1988, Youth of Today released the song “No More”.
