Stephen King was born in 1947 in the town of Portland, Maine. He was raised in Durham, Maine. He was raised along side his brother, David, by his mother. His father walked out on the family in 1950, leaving King’s mother forced to work odd jobs to provide for her family. When Stephen was only six years old, there was an incident in which his eardrum was punctured more than once. The author recalls the experience as very painful, and one he will never forget. The young King attended grammar school at Durham and Lisbon Heights High School. During his teenage years he wrote short stories and played in a rock band, which shows that the author not only has appreciation for writing, but also music. King edited his school’s newspaper, and he also wrote for the local paper, Weekly Enterprise. He submitted his first story for publication in 1960, only for it to be rejected. His first story was later published in a horror fanzine. (Stephen King)
King graduated from the University of Maine in 1970. The following year, he married Tabitha Spruce, who received fame as an author as well.
