Stem Cell Research - Human Ethics vs. Medical Advances
For the past and future years, the research and development of human stem cell research has been one big ethical debate. “The main bioethical issues associated with human stem cells involve their derivation and use for research” (Hyun Insoo, 1). The issues that surround stem cell research are primarily focused on how they are collected. Different denominations across the world spark these ethical arguments. Medical research has even shown positive effects in stem cell transplants, but the Church as a whole still sides against its research.
The different types of stem cells can be summarized as aborted fetus cells, umbilical cord blood cells, and the most intense one is human embryonic stem cells. The controversy surrounding human embryonic stem cells make it the most focused ethic debate. The reason why embryonic stem cells are the center of the controversy is because it’s considered a form of abortion. The reason behind this statement is because to obtain these stem cells, the embryo is killed in the process. “There is a fervent battle over the ethical acceptability of destroying early embryos to derive pluripotent embryonic stem cells, which is necessary to obtain them” (John Robertson, 192). In the United States specifically there is a division amongst the people based on their morals. One side of the divide is the population who consider the embryos as new human beings and individuals who deserve the moral and legal rights of a normal human being. Even if the embryos are no longer wanted by the couples who created them, this side of the divide still opposes their destruction to obtain stem cells. Those who are on the other side of the divide, hold opposite opinions on the matter.
