Could replace your opening statement

As a kid I remember being fascinated with magic. The mystery that shrouded most magic tricks bewildered me to an extent that I accepted a false reality. For a brief period of time I had accepted the idea that magic was some talent that only a few people could have. That thought hadn’t changed for a few years till I saw another magician perform, this time I was a bit more attentive in my observation and I had someone mutter in my ears that it was all a trick of the hand. I went a step further and told him in most cases it is science of things we had not understood yet. That latter part of the statement stuck with me. While I was at school, I gained a lot of appreciation for all forms of science. Be it physical, applied, formal, life or social. I believe that our understanding & knowledge of sciences is only bound by oneself. So I stayed inquisitive, dedicated my time to better my understanding about science and I started looking at things in a different manner and I realized that I had the potential to unlock some of these mysteries. My teachers at school played a large part in shaping my thoughts and instilling a sense of reasoning. In my Bachelor’s program I would like to devote my efforts, creative energies and skills to work on various developments projects and newer technologies/processes so that I am able to learn new skills and knowledge. I consider myself a person who benefits from practical experience and for that reason, I am certain Chemical Engineering would be good fit for me. I would like to pursue the Double Degree program at National University of Singapore in Chemical Engineering and Economics. My goal would be to eventually work in the energy sector. The growing need for the alternative energy solutions are being driven predominantly by chemical process enhancements. The choice of my second major may seem peculiar but I find economics to be just as practical as the sciences. Game theory for instance has found its way into a few engineering applications including smart meters for energy distribution at the utilities level. I have researched the two fields a fair bit to envision a path I would like to take in the future.

Over the years, my quest to better understand science and enhance my knowledge brought me multiple accolades. I was awarded the Scholastic Award twice, from 2011 – 2012 & 2012- 2013. I was chosen as a member of the Student Council for the 2011 – 2012 year. After which I was chosen as the Class Prefect the following year. I was also chosen to participate in numerous National Science Olympiads and International Math & English Olympiads.

Standing as the foremost and the most prestigious university in Singapore , NUS has proved to be a powerhouse of technology. I believe the transformative and multidisciplinary education at NUS will help me develop skills for lifelong inquiry and learning. The main goal of my education is to gain valuable research experience and deepen my knowledge. With all the future and aspirations ahead of me, I am applying to your institute for the
Bachelor’s program in Engineering this year.
