Junior recital held on November 18,2013 at Pottle Auditorium was an Italian opera with a combination of vocal and instrumental music. The music was of Baroque era and the opera included 9 songs. At first Che fiero costume composed by Giovanni Legrenzi (1626-1690) was performed. Though I didn't understand the lyrics but according to the translation the song was very much based on the blaming God for bringing him grief. After that "Lungi dal caro bene" composed by Antonio Secchi (1761-1833) was performed. The translated English version of the song described the pain of life and his beloved one. After the two songs finished, two new songs were performed. "Les Berceaux" composed by Gabriel Faure (1845-1924) and soon after Mai by the same composer. The combination of piano and vocal presented a harmonic sound. Right after the two songs ended, Allerseelen composed by Richard Strauss (1864-1949) was performed and then Die Forelle composed by Franz Schubert (1797-1823) was performed. Then two other songs composed by Paul Bowles(1910-1999) were performed. Music of Blue Mountain Ballads where initially Heavenly Grass and finally Sugar in the Cane was performed. At last Donne mie, la fate a tanti from Cosi fan tutte composed by W.A. Mozart (1756-1791) was performed.

Conclusion: Overall the program was quite amazing and entertaining. The opera ended with a great applause for the performers. It was a great

The first song was titled “Fanfare for Saint Cecilia.” This piece was composed for Saint Cecilia on a special occasion called “Three Countries Day.” This is an example like we talked about in class where a composer had a job of composing music for a certain event because prerecorded music wasn’t available at that time. The song had a magnificent and triumphant feel to it with many brass heavy parts specifically trumpet. Woodwinds played the accompaniment underneath but were not heard exclusively. Some parts I liked about this piece was the overall excitement that it had and the energy that the ensemble put into it. It was very easy to tell that the instrumentalists enjoyed playing the song.…

    Orchestra Concert Essay

In addition to the large ensemble, the orchestra played in an allargando (5) manner, in which the orchestra grew louder and then softer, which is also common to the Romantic era. As the orchestra progressed through the piece, the orchestra used various bow styles in order to dramatize the music. The ensemble played the symphony using legato, marcato (5), and spiccato (6), which contributed to the immense sound. The composer’s style of this piece was typical for the Romantic era because the composition was extensive, and included the piano, which is a well-known, as well as, important instrument in the Romantic era. The symphony, although has many characteristics included in the Romantic era, is not completely similar to other pieces that I have performed that are included in the Romantic era. Unlike the Shostakovich’s symphony, “Largo”, is a slow and steady piece that includes dynamic fluctuations. Similar to the symphony, the piece “Bacchanale” involves using…

In the following, three operas will be compared by their ability to effectively tell stories through music. The three operas that will be discussed are: “Don Giovanni” by Mozart, “La Boheme” by Puccini, and “Wozzeck” by Berg. All of them represent a different era in classical music, and have similarities and differences. The music will be analyzed both instrumentally and vocally, to show how each is able to communicate to the audience, and tell a story.…

The last piece conducted was “A Child’s Garden of Dreams” by David Maslanka. The tone colors of this piece had a pinging and jingly. There was much imitation in this piece and it reminds me of a twilight movie. The rhythm was long and smooth. The tempo was played in andante and the dynamics started in mezzo piano and crescendos to mezzo forte.…

The piece consisted of only one melody, performed by male voices in sync without any instrumental sounds. In addition, the tone of the piece was modal with tonic pitch of G and the third above it. Since the dynamics of the piece maintained from mezzo piano to mezzo forte without sudden or drastic dynamics changes, the piece flowed smoothly creating a great pleasure to the listeners. I enjoyed the smoothness of the piece and the descending scalar passages greatly adopted throughout the music. However, I did not appreciate much of the free style of the stanzas and the short…

I had two favorite pieces throughout out this opera. Una donna a 15 anni and the finale Ah, Signor, Son Rea Di Morte. First I want to discuss Una donna a 15 anni. This piece of the opera was an aria, Despina was the soloist. This opera was made during the classical period which was known for a few characteristics. This piece has a flexible rhythm, unexpected pauses, syncopations, and frequent changes from long notes to shorter notes. This exert has a very classical melody, it is balanced there is a beginning and end which sound very much alike, it is also very catchy and will have you humming the tune later. Before I attended this opera I skipped to the classical period in our text book and read over a few sections that I thought would be relevant to the performance. While I was watching I recognized a lot of the characteristics between this performance and other classical music. This heightened my…

As the show goes on, Clara sings a song called “The Beauty Is”which is her telling you of what she's experiencing for the first time somewhere new. After she meets fabrizio, and he's fallen in love, he goes on to sing a song in full italian called “Il Mondo Era Vuoto”. This song is all about how Clara fills the “light” in his life that he was always missing. Its truly a beautiful and one of the most passionate songs in the show. The way it is written shows precisie emotions and you can almost understand the message without the text being sung along. Fabrizio asks Clara on a walk in the piazza. There, he serenades her with a fun song “Passeggiata” to show her of the place he knows the best, Italy. As Clara and Fabrizio's love grows, Margaret's and Roys (her husband's) dies. Margaret towards the end of the first act sings a song of falling out of love with her husband and reminiscing on the beautiful times they shared when they were in love by singing “Dividing Day”. This song by far is the most passionate, sad, and most beautiful song I have ever heard throughout the musical theater realm. There are many…

The first piece that was played sounded like a love song. It was mellow and slow. The piece was romantic, almost as if someone was about to propose. The solo violin dominated the piece beautifully. The second piece played had a quicker rhythm to it. It moved along almost as if children were playing gracefully in the park. This piece also focused primarily on the solo violin. Other instruments followed the violin's lead, playing the same verse…

Throughout the play the all sang songs with the accompanied with the piano. Even though there was the one instrument through the play the way she played through each piece of poetry song was very different. As the singer sang “love isn’t chocolate and rose”. The way the piano player decreased her speed of playing with this song because the song tone and feeling was a slower pace. And she adjusted to the sense of emotion the singer was describing about love. I thought it was cool but the words and the music together I gives and audience more sense of emotion and imagery in their heads. Another part where the pianist start to increase her speed or playing and she makes more bold accents with in the piece “Love Song from song of perfect propriety”. The sing how love is sweet, then she starts to become more hateful about the idea of love. And the piano continued to play deep sharp bold notes and the singer was in still mezzo soprano voice still. Still neat as the instrument was still creating a tone with the singer throughout the…

Jean –Baptiste Lully and Jean –Philippe Rameau both were composers who made a distinctive contribution into a development of French opera genre. Born in 1632, Jean – Baptiste Lully was probably the most powerful force in French music in the seventeenth century. With a generous support of Louis XIV who granted him an exclusive right to produce sung drama in France, he and his librettist Jean – Philippe Quinalt reconciled the demands of drama, music and ballet in a new French form of opera called tragédie lyrique.…

Giacomo Puccini has written a number of operas, including Turandot, Gianni Schicchi, and Madama Butterfly. La Bohème is said to be “one of the most successful and enchanting operas ever written.” Written in the romantic period, the text and score interrelations play an important role in an overall aesthetically and historically pleasing opera. In a story of love found and love lost, Puccini uses text and score to create empathy for the characters of La Boheme. Puccini does so particularly in the aria Donde lieta uscì, sung by Mimi towards the end of Act III.…
