Imaginative/Creative Paper- Statement of Intent 2c

In a society of oppression and extreme obedience, Winston Smith is a dead man walking with individual thoughts and a vague feeling that things are not as they should be. He signifies The Party’s failure, despite its indoctrination, and is clearly established from the beginning of the novel as the un-heroic figure. However, in many ways, it is clear that he is to stand for Everyman, and is the last free-thinking being to exist. He is presented as a man from an earlier age, old enough to have a faint memory of the distant world when he was a boy and to respond to objects from an earlier era (the “smooth creamy pages” of the diary, the nib-pen which he feels the diary deserves, and the “soft rainwatery glass” of the coral paperweight). His sole function in the Oceanic society is to destroy and recreate the past, and ironically, it is the past that Winston craves to understand. In this desire for knowledge and self-awareness, he rebels against the totalitarian government that demands absolute control. At the beginning, Winston’s rebellion consists mainly of a dislike of the physical dullness of the world in which he lives, and his diary enables him to express his unease without having to formulate the principles which he feels Ingsoc has violated. His acts of rebellion against society in which he lives (buying and writing in diary and having an affair with Julia) are, in the last analysis, less important than the rebellion of mind and feeling from which they all stem from, and it is for this that he is punished. As he reflects in the first chapter: “Only the Thought Police mattered”, he shows a slight awareness in how insignificant he is. This creative piece will attempt to channel all of Winton Smith’s emotions into two additional diary entries to describe a totalitarian government bent on total manipulation.
