State, Government, and Liberty
In the modern period, the State and the Government each has a general designation. We regard the State as the self-governing political community that occupies its own territory and which is bounded by the common habits and customs into one body politic exercising, through the medium of an organized government. The Government tends to be the system or policy by which the State is governed. This is where the members of the State are administered and regulated. It is the system of social control under which the right to make laws, and the right to enforce them, is vested in a particular group in society. The government tends to be the instrument of the State on its aim to attain an ordered society.
However, other people thought the State and the government as one and others switch over the roles of each. Varied conceptions have been transparent as philosophical thinkers have used these concepts in their view and justification on how to attain a just and harmonious living.
One reason Plato became a legendary was his account of the Ideal State. “A State, I said, arises, as I conceive, out of the needs of mankind; no one is self-sufficing, but all of us have many wants. Can any other origin of a State be imagined?”(The Republic, Book II) Plato viewed the State as a political association and the visible embodiment of justice under the conditions of human society. He further elaborated his concept of the State as he discussed the role of justice in it. He concluded that justice is the order of the State. Having said why the State arises, the subsistence of justice in the State assures that the fundamental needs are sufficiently provided and thus, society flourishes since it is efficient. “But that our aim in founding the State was not the disproportionate happiness of any one class, but the greatest happiness of the whole; we thought that in a State which is ordered with a view to the good of the whole we should be most likely to find...
