Standardized testing is used across our nation as an assessment for students’ academic achievement. The t Act, No Child Left Behind, was signed into law on January 8th, 2002 by president George W. Bush. (Department of Education, 2005) This law was created to hold states and their schools accountable for the achievement of the students. Since then, each state has been required to create an accountability system for students’ performance. Many of these new testing systems hold strong accountability and consequences for not meeting the expected performance standards.(Department Of Education, 2005) This law has taken basic standardized testing and transformed it into a high stakes testing battle over rewards and consequences. Standardized testing can be used to form a common ground to judge a students cognitive level of understanding; however, high stakes standardized tests should not be given. They put pressure on students, teachers and administrators to focus on test preparation and to excel at scoring well on one test. When in fact, one test should not hold the control of the future for a school system or a student. Standardized testing began to take popularity in the 1970’s. It was not until this era, that standardized testing began to hold consequences for children and their schools. An education reform, which was often referred to as the minimum competency movement, was the spark that set this nation on a standardized testing kick. “Between 1975 and 1978, more than 30 states enacted Minimum Competency testing mandates”( Pipho, 2004). The purpose for creating these tests was for many understandable reasons. States were able to form a common ground to judge a students cognitive understanding. They also were able to make judgments about school distracts to see if they were delivering the best possible education to students.
