Using the concept of a 'world view', identify some of the beliefs and attitudes, particularly to education and learning that you bring to your learning now.
Reflect critically on how your worldview has been shaped by factors such as your gender, age or community.
In your answer refer to Hobson (1996) and Samovar and Porter (2004) from the SSK12 Reader, and Chapter 1 in A Guide to Learning Independently (Marshall and Rowland, 2006, 1-18).
Looking at my worldview and looking how and why I have got the attitudes and beliefs I do towards education and learning. This opinion has changed through the stages of my life as I have become more aware of the situation of other people. Throughout this essay I aim to explore the factors which have led me to have the views I have and how they have also changed.
In this essay I will discuss what factors and try to explain how they influenced my current views and beliefs towards education and learning.
Samovar and Porter (2004, 97) argue some very good points when it comes to worldview but one statement that I liked and I agree with is “Often, world views operate at an unconscious level, so that we are not even aware that other ways of seeing the world are possible or legitimate. Like the air we breathe, worldviews are a vital part of who we are but not a part we usually think much about.”
In Hobson (1996) has similar views to world view as Samovar and Porter (2004,97) but is expressed in a different way and also speaks about the change of world view over time, but the quote that grabbed me the most was “Well, in this world view the mind is not a part of nature, The mind is separate. Mind & body are split and the self is seen as an independent atom, disconnected from nature, disconnected from all other independent atoms.”(Hobson 1996).
