BANG! BANG! BANG! Those are the typical sounds heard in the woods on the first Saturday of October. What are you those sounds? They are gun shots that are being fired by the many hunters trying to kill their first squirrel of the season. Sure there are more things to hunt other than just squirrels but the most common and most important in small town Deville is none other than squirrel hunting. Several people hunt for either just the sport of the game or to provide food. Others even use their kill for other thing such as the coat of their kill or to even mount it to provide decoration in their homes. Hunting takes place everywhere in the world, including the United States and most importantly in the southern states.
Which brings me to Deville. Deville is a small town, centrally located in Louisiana. It is in Rapides Parish and has around a population of 1,500 people. Most of the people living there are families that have lived in Deville all of their lives. Everyone is pretty much related and if they are not, they are close enough to family to be. In this town, it is true that everyone knows everything that goes on. If something goes on, within a matter of time the whole town will know about it. Deville is made up of about four large communities: Hickory Grove, Cotton Island, Holloway, and Buckeye. One thing that all four of these communities have in common is they all love hunting season, but mainly, they all love squirrel hunting season.
The local high school in Deville, Louisiana is named Buckeye High School. It provides education to around 960 students, grades six through twelve. This school is very well known for being the “redneck” school of Rapides Parish. Most of the students that go to Buckeye High School live on a farm or something like it.
