Test 2 Study Guide
 
 
Test 2 consists of multiple-choice/true-false questions and covers the topics listed below. The questions are based on the material discussed in class, covered in A Guide to MySQL textbook (Chapters 1, 3, 4, and 5), and presented in Power-Point presentations. Students are expected to know the syntax for all SQL commands discussed. Test 2 is closed book, closed notes.

Topics include but are not limited to:
Chapter 1: Introduction to Premiere Products, Henry Books, and Alexamara Marina Group database: A structure that contains different categories of information and the relationships between these categories database management system (DBMS): A software program that lets you create a database and then use it to add, change, delete, sort, and view the data in a database DDL: data definition language

DML: data manipulation language
MySQL: An open source, full-featured database management system Open source software: Software for which the source code is freely and publicly available SQL: Structured Query Language
Structured Query Language: A language used for retrieving and manipulating database data

Chapter 3: An Introduction to SQL
CREATE DATABASE: The SQL command to create a database
Database schema: logical container for the database objects
default database: Database to which all subsequent commands pertain data type : Type of data that a column can contain as well as the maximum number of characters or digits that the column can store Character

CHAR(n): Fixed-length character data
VARCHAR(n): Variable-length character data
Number
DECIMAL(p,q): used to represent decimal numbers
INT: used to represent integer values
Date
DATE
DELETE: The SQL command used to delete a row in a table
DESCRIBE: The SQL command used to list all the columns in a table and their corresponding data types DROP TABLE: The SQL command used to drop an entire table
INSERT: The SQL command used to add rows to a table
MySQL : An open source database management system that supports the SQL language NOT NULL: The clause in a CREATE TABLE command used to indicate which columns cannot contain null values null: A data value used to represent situations in which an actual value is unknown, unavailable or not applicable null data value: A data value used to represent situations in which an actual value is unknown, unavailable or not applicable Reserved words: SQL command words

script file: A file that contains one or more SQL commands
SELECT: The SQL command used to view data in a table
SHOW COLUMNS: The SQL command used to list all the columns in a table SQL : Structured Query Language
statement history: A special area in which the most recently entered command is stored Structured Query Language: A language used for retrieving and manipulating database data UPDATE: The SQL command used to change a value in a table

USE: The SQL command to change the default database
VALUES: The SQL command used to insert values in a table

Chapter 4: Single-Table Queries
aggregate function: Special SQL functions that apply to groups of rows and used to calculate sums, averages, counts, maximum values, and minimum values AND: logical operator that connects simple conditions and requires all conditions to be true for the compound condition to be true AVG: function that calculates the average value in a numeric range BETWEEN: special operator that specifies a range of values in a condition compound condition: A condition formed by connecting two or more simple conditions computed column: A column that does not exist in the database but can be computed using data in existing columns COUNT: function that counts the number of rows in a table

DESC: operator included in an ORDER BY clause when results are to be sorted in descending order DISTINCT: operator that eliminates duplicate values in the results of a query FROM clause: The clause that indicates the table from which to retrieve the...
