Now here are the differences between the two sports. The fields used for cricket are very different from the fields used for baseball. The cricket field has no foul territory and is an oval shape. The baseball diamond is of course a diamond shape and has foul territory. The cricket field has two bases, or wickets, 66 feet apart and two cricket players run back and forth to score runs and six runs can be scored on one hit. The bowler throws the ball from the opposite wicket. In cricket, the teams switch places…

Instead of throwing the ball straight to the Catcher, the bowler skips the ball to the catcher and the batter attempts to hit the ball. Cricket has over 30 places a defender could place themselves, but, only 11 defenders are allowed on the field at one time (Cricket Rules). There are only two bases on the field, including home plate. A cricket field is usually oval in shape and 450 plus feet in every direction of the batter including behind the player (Cricket Rules). Cricket batters use bats with a small oval handle with a wide flat barrel to make it easier to hit the ball. Defenders do not use gloves because the players need to be quick and a baseball style glove would slow the player down and make it difficult to field the ball Cricket Rules).…

Cricket is a little bit different seeing as you have two batters at the same time. There are two sets of wickets if the batter hits the ball he then runs to the other set of wickets to score a point he can do this multiple times if he hits it far enough. If the ball hits the “boundary” the player gets four points, and if he hits it over the “boundary” he gets six points. In order to switch sides the opposing team must get ten of the batters out. Ways to get a batter out is to knock over the set of wickets behind him, catch the ball he hits, he can also be “stumped” witch is when the batter steps too far forward and misses the ball and the keeper catches it and the knocks over the wicket, or a LBW witch is a leg before wicket. The LBW is where the ball hits the batters leg pads and the umpire figures it would have hit the wicket if it didn’t hit the pads.…

    West Indian Culture

Cricket today, as it has been said many times, is not what it used to be. Unfortunately many young West Indians know very little of what is once was and what it stood for, they take for granted the techniques and its origins. The level of West Indies cricket has been diluted due to the increase of tourism and fast paced games. However there are many West Indians who hold strong to the fact that cricket is part of our culture and heritage. This archipelago in the Americas has produced many fine cricketers throughout the years. The Caribbean is a unique multicultural and multiethnic region; the majority of the population was forced to migrate after the original inhabitants faced almost complete annihilation. The survivors were at no level to repopulate the Caribbean. As a result there was no previous pattern for the new comers to follow; they had to create their own. West Indians had to develop their own religion, food, politics, art and essentially their entire culture. Cricket was one such aspect, though not their own, over time they moulded and shaped it into what it is today. Cricket came to the West Indies via the English military that were deployed to defeat Napoleon’s west India project and to suppress uprisings, they played the game during their free time, which was relaxing and reminded them of home. The game was introduced as a means of portraying the high statute that was English. During the Victorian age the English empire was at its peak, it had expanded considerably and was proud of its successes, she deemed herself as superior in commerce, morals and race. At this time the only thing that was missing was cricket, Lord Harris, a colonial administrator saw cricket as a method of teaching discipline, loyalty and acceptance of decisions in order to consolidate the empire.…

Cricket also followed other sports in its use of video technology in making onfield decisions. Initially, from its first trial in 1992, only line decisions such as run outs were decided by referral to a third umpire off the field. But in 2008 a new referral system, in which players were allowed to refer any onfield decision to the third umpire, made its international debut in a series between India and Sri Lanka (it had been put on trial in English…

It is an excerpt from A.G Macdonnel’s humorous novel ‘England, their England’. The English society has been satirized in a light hearted manner especially what is known as ‘Englishness’ , as seen from the eyes of a Scotsman. In this the author humorously describes a cricket match being played between men from England and men from Scotland in the village of Fordendan. The cricketers are petty businessmen or local shopkeepers. The story is presented in a mock epic style and ornate and bombastic language has been used to bring out this effect.…

The game of cricket, played at a leisurely pace then at the Test and county level, was on verge of going through a transition with the introduction of limited-over’s games at the county level. Just about then, the first ever One-day International was played between England and Australia at the MCG in 1971. The popularity of this shorter format of cricket was catching at such a brisk pace that the authorities controlling the game had to bring in something different to make the game a lot more entertaining.…
