As American culture has evolved through time, the game of baseball has remained a largely unchanged staple in our society. It is a game so culturally revered, so quintessentially American, that it has been forever dubbed our national pastime. Baseball also has an illustrious literary tradition that surpasses simply writing about a sport. The stories told on and off the field by some very distinguished twentieth-century American writers have undoubtedly carved out their own place in American literary tradition and have used the game as a metaphor for American childhood and innocence. John Thorn says it best in his 1995 essay…

Recently, the 7th largest gathering in human history came about as the Chicago Cubs celebrated winning the world series. (Flosi p1). This highlights the huge impact baseball has on American culture today. In my opinion, baseball is so popular in American culture due to its accessibility and simplicity. Playing baseball recreationally requires very little equipment and can be enjoyed in any open area. These reasons make it a popular sport for children. Therefore, a connection can be made between childhood and baseball which allows adults to enjoy the sport. Moreover, its relatively slow pace allows for social events to occur while the game is…

Dad was the ball for the 1987 World Series and mother was the ball for the 1991 World Series. I am no hero like them, but I still made it. Today I am the ball for the Twins and Tigers game. “GET HOME!!! GET HOME!!!” Those were the words my dad would yell from the third base coach’s box as I passed him rounding third! Baseball to me is more than just a game! Baseball is a passion, fueled by the desire to succeed, the passion to overcome, and the dedication to be great. A baseball field to me is like a stage is to a dancer or an open road for a biker; I just love every aspect of this amazing sport. It’s the field with its seemingly unfair depth, its soft green grass and the infamous red dirt, that make me have the passion for the game like my father did as a child. My life seemed to be limitless when I was in between that fence. Taking cuts on the tee, putting together a pickup game that didn’t matter who won or lost, or even on those days that practice seemed to never end, I still had the love for the game.…
