Students with Severe Disabilities

After observing students with disabilities it is difficult to hear and see the negative stigma that is associated with children and people that have disabilities.   A majority of the population still has difficulties to accept diversity, and understand it positively, as an opportunity for learning.   The negative thoughts and feelings that people have towards the disabled can often be more painful than the disability itself.   Also, students with disabilities often get a second hand education compared to children that do not have disabilities.   When thinking about this you begin to realize why it is you do not see more disabled children in everyday life.   This example and situation is one of the things that helps create and reinforce the negative thoughts and attitudes towards the disabled.   In this essay I will talk about these negative attitudes and how they can be a problem for a disabled person trying to get a general education.   I will discuss what they are, how they are formed, and what their influence is.   I will finish the essay by talking about some steps that we could take towards attitude change when it comes to this subject.

When talking about the disabled there are many key concepts that must be defined so that it can actually be understood what they are going through and what they have to endure on a regular basis.   Inclusive education is a concept that is constantly changing.   The basic definition of this concept is education of children with disabilities in a general school.   This however, is the basic definition of the term and in actuality it is a much broader term then that.   From a special educators point of view they would hope that this term meant an education system that constantly works on increasing participation and removing exclusion from all aspects of schooling in a way that would make a disabled student feel no different than any other student in general education....
