“Souls of Black Folk”
“This sense of always looking at one's self through the eyes of others , of measuring one's soul by the tape of a world that looks on in amused contempt and pity”.(Du Bois) He means that inside one black man there is two identity’s, one for who is really is and one for who he has to pretend to be.Its like he is fighting for who he really is.The world expects black people to act a certain way because of stereotypes but in reality there are many who follow the norm.I believe that Du Bois is saying that he leads two different life's depending on who he is around, that to me describes what he is going through and what he is meaning.
“emancipation was the key to a promised land of sweeter beauty than ever stretched before the eyes of wearied israelites”.(Du Bois) Disappointment followed the black male according to Du Bois. I believe he feels as if the black man still isn’t free that we are all just pushing it under the rug.His reasoning for this would be the first decade blacks still had to find freedom, the had to still make it to the north before being completely free.another reasoning the KKK (klu klux klan) they were killing blacks , letting it be known that they didn’t want them around I ask myself how is that free.Voting was a step up but to him there voting was vain something that stood out to me the Du Bois said was “away with the black mans ballot , by force or fraud and behold the suicide of a race”. This is saying that with out the black mans right to vote and stand up for what they believe in is going to cause suicide to the race!Its like 1876 left blacks half free in the words of Du Bois.
This essay is very pessimistic.I didn’t feel that the author had anything positive to say about his experiences.I feel as though he believes the future of the U.S race relations is negative.I say this because he never once said something positive about the...
