Sop on Molecular Biology
Statement of Purpose
Some people view biological science as an area of science which is boring; requiring intensive memorization and less logical reasoning. True to my heart, my view towards biological science was no difference! It was not before my higher secondary school classes when I first realized the beauty of this scientific arena. I had my first glimpse at molecular biology then. But that brief introduction to molecular biology was enough to compel me to the idea that I want to spend my whole life working and conducting research on it. That passion and zeal brought me to where right now I am. I have successfully completed my masters from the Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, University of Dhaka. I want to note that very few universities offer courses related to molecular biology here in Bangladesh but University of Dhaka is the best among them.
I consider the admission in the department of genetic engineering and biotechnology as a turning point of my life. The pleasure that I used to get from unraveling the mysteries of life could not be compared to anything else. I was enthralled by the well balance of gene regulatory system. How a subtle change can lead to a life threatening disease like cancer; even a single base pair change can cause sickle cell anemia. The more astonishing is the pathogenicity of viruses, evasion of immune system by them. But the more I got to know the science, the more I started to feel my liability to the society. This knowledge I was acquiring should not be only to know the world around me but to change the world. It is about 30 years and there is no prevention for HIV, despite the recent advancements the cancer patients are still agonizing. I just cannot only acquire knowledge to get a good job; there are lots of things to do. And the positive changes that I aspire to bring in the world can only be done by a researcher. And to be a researcher there is no alternative to gain specialization through a PhD. So I

    a. What would you expect to happen if you added ddCTP (shown in a) to a DNA synthesis reaction in vitro in large excess over the concentration of deoxycytidine triphosphate (dCTP)? How will this affect the pattern of bands on the sequencing gel? The ddCTP lacks the OH, which is required for elongation of the DNA strand. As a result, when ddCTP is added, elongation will be halted. The ddCTP acts as a chain terminator. The pattern of the bands will be much shorter(as soon as the ddCTP is added, there will be an termination of bands)…

This demonstrates my commitment and capability to cope with challenging situations and be an effective team member. A hospital placement was an invaluable experience as I witnessed medical synchronisation by shadowing medics and how they form the backbone of science. My core subjects inspired me to do an EPQ on 'Can engineering help with the early diagnosis of dementia?'. My EPQ draws on many aspects, such as how advances in medical imagery can help diagnose Alzheimer's disease earlier. Being a future ambassador of STEM and taking part in organisations like the 'Stemmettes' and 'WISE' has shown me that University will give me the tools to succeed in the biomedical industry. Through workshops I participated and had created 3D simulations and built artificial organs using technology and understood the necessity of using mathematical models to develop drugs. Being involved in the 'BP Day' allowed me to demonstrate practical and creative skills which in turn led me to win the title of 'Modern muse challenge for most original innovated designer for an app'. One of my most vivid memories from my childhood was the day I received a plastic toy stethoscope from my grandfather. Years later, I realize how it was not only a new plaything, but one that would inspire me to choose my future career path. While medicine is a tough field of study, I know that it is tougher still to toil the earth as my grandfather did in the hot indian summers. At his side after a long day’s work, I would help him at the night clinic he opened for free vaccinations. As I entered high school, I strived to embody such initiative and leadership by running for the Student Council and serving as Class Representative. Taking AP Biology and AP Environmental Science ignited my fascination about how living organisms and cellular systems effortlessly work together, grow, and adapt to their environment,…

Over the years I have discovered many things, alone, about myself, that would benefit me in the long run. As a child, math and science didn’t interest me, but I always knew what profession I wanted to take up, while in college. It was not until my high school years that I begun to realize the chosen field I wanted to major in medicine. I was surprised on how much I had evolved on the idea of math and science. Still, I was very much unaware of my next step with fulfilling my dream in college. However through research and determination I would soon be able to work towards my goals.…

This position has given me the opportunity to decide if a career in medicine is truly where I would like to be. Working at the hospital has been a truly challenging experience through dealing with the magnitude of death, illness, and recovery. This experience has made me realize that a career in medicine is where I need to be. I have experienced a multitude of emotions and in the end I have realized that the reward of knowing that a life was saved or that through the death of a patient, we have made groundbreaking discoveries in medicine is far greater than the emotional tensity associated with the experience.…

Biology fascinates me, simply because we are only able to live, think, and question because of it. It is, quite literally, the foundation of our existence. The academic pursuit to understand the messy and complex logic of life, at the molecular, cellular and organismal level, deeply appeals to me. I am particularly interested in Biomedical Science, as it delves deeper into human biology, and applies the scientific knowledge gleaned to help with disease understanding and treatment. I was piqued by what I had studied in biology class, on gene function and the problems associated with its dysfunction, thus I have explored some extracurricular material.…

I began spending much of my free time reading up on the latest advancements in medical research. The subject matter engendered a level of excitement that I did not experience in the work related to my current career. My enthusiasm for the material, in combination with the experiences from my upbringing, prompted me to enroll in undergraduate biology and chemistry courses. These studies led me to the realization that I wanted to pursue a career that would allow me to combine my commitment to science with my desire to make an impact in the field of medicine. I have decided to move forward with applying for a master’s degree in cell and molecular biology at San Diego State University (SDSU) in order to facilitate a career change to medical…

"So have you decided what you want to major in yet?" asked my high school counselor as I sat before her trying to decide what my class schedule would be like for the following year. I wasnt sure how to reply to such a question considering it was one of the most important questions I could ever answer that would direct my life to its development. I began thinking about all the classes Ive taken throughout high school and there was one class that really stuck. A class I took my junior year as an elective, a class I took just to see what it was like. After taking Environmental Science for a full year I discovered myself and my views on the critical issues of our surroundings. I discovered a different way of thinking I never thought I possessed; the way that made me become more aware about issues that involve our planet. I deeply contemplated the question and answered with a smile on my face, Yeah, I want to be an Environmental Engineer. I was convinced about my choice and ready to incorporate all the lessons I learned from the various readings and projects and opening a new opportunity for others to learn what I did in my class. I was dedicated to ensure that our future generations would not live the life of affluence that many of us live today. I believe it is crucial for everyone to understand how our current global problems affect everyone, present and future, and that is what influenced my decision to choose the major that I did.…

Beforehand, the medical field peaked my interest, however, after my diagnosis, I took a step back and realized the plethora of unknown there is in science: loads of people lose their battles to cancer, ALS still takes lives, and diabetes has not been cured yet. In other words, although science can explain tons of phenomena, countless of diseases and syndromes have not been completely cured or even understood yet.…

While this research was fulfilling and I felt that I was finally applying knowledge in a productive way, I could not picture myself pursuing a career as a professor full time. I knew that I was capable of working in a lab setting, but I did not have the experience of directly helping the public in a way that I wanted to. Although my goal as a genetic counselor is at first to work with patients in a clinical setting, my extensive time spent in a laboratory will aid me in the future if I…
