Analysis of: (Sonny’s Blues)
People all over the world suffer in different ways of discrimination. Many times is because of the skin color or language barrier, but many people suffer from this kind of discrimination. The story “Sonny’s Blues” tells the story of two brothers who come to understand each other after being separated for a long time. More specifically it highlights through its two main characters the two sides of the African-American experience. Baldwin writes about the responsibilities of the older brother to take care of his younger brother, and how they overcome their problems. Coming from a low-income family and being black as a disadvantage affected their way of seeing life. The narrator has assimilated into white society as much as possible, but still feels the pain of institutional racism and the limits placed upon his opportunity. Sonny who is the youngest brother tries to overcome or cover his problems of drugs trough music, especially jazz and the blues kinds that were developed by African-American musicians. The author and writer James Baldwin is one of the most recognized African American writers in France in the early 1950’s. He has written many books where he expresses his history in different ways; he has always explained what was really happening in his era within his books. Baldwin was born in Harlem, NY. His father was a preacher and later Baldwin became a street preacher early in his life as well, but then he started to travel and ended up in France where he called it his second home. Baldwin was originally from America, but he decided to stay in France due to racial conflicts and discrimination in America. In France, Baldwin became a writer and started to write books and stories where he explained how he felt about the discrimination of African Americans in America.
