William Shakespeare-Sonnet 30

The first line of this sonnet sets a light, dream like mood, "When to the sessions of sweet silent thought". However this mood quickly transitions to a more ominous and sad feeling. This mood is also maintained throughout the sonnet, although it is not until the last line that the mood changes drastically.

In this sonnet, the speakers main topic is nostalgia, and his dissatisfaction with his time and love lost. The first line gives the reader an image of a man pondering in thought pleasantly, but this is not true due to the third line "I sigh the lack of many thing i sought". In this line the speaker is talking about his dreams he never got to accomplish. He also reiterates this feeling with fourth line, which he talks about how he wasted all his valuable time when he was younger. The speaker then goes on to talk about other problems from his past "For precious friends hid in death's dateless night". This line is about all the friends the speaker lost throughout his life. The speaker also expresses his sadness for other things and people he lost in the eighth line "And moan the expense of many a vanished sight". When the speaker says " Which I new pay as if not paid before" he means that he still cries about these things as if they are still new problems. This means the speaker can not find a way to deal with these problems he is facing, that is until the last two lines. "But if the while i think on thee, dear friend, All the losses are restored and sorrows end." With these last two lines the speaker expresses that the only way to forget about his regret filled past is to thing of this special person. Although it is unclear who this person is the speaker is talking about, it is evident that it is a significant other and possibly a lover.
