Song Analysis - American Soldier
Song Analysis
American Soldier by Toby Keith
I am proud to be an American. This song has always been close to my heart. I have family that has served in the military past and present. I pray every day that our service men and women are home safe in their beds at night. For those that have had to go overseas and serve, it is hard on them and their families. The time they spend away from their families in order to protect us is often not thought about. This song represents the men and women who serve our country and the sacrifices they make.
This song portrays how we as Americans should represent our country, soldiers or not. We should be proud to be Americans and represent our country in the best possible way. It also shows that we should be there for each other, to stand beside each other and to do what is right. If only all Americans could have the bond for each other that our soldiers have, we would be a much better country. They fight beside each as brothers and sisters for our country and protect our rights.
In the Declaration of Independence it states that all men are created equal and they should have the right to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. Our service men and women fight to serve our country in order for each one of us to have these rights and to be able to live our lives to the fullest each and every day. Yet when the soldiers return, they are often not given the respect they deserve. We as a nation need to come together and support them for the service they have given our country. We as Americans should not take things for granted. We should all be responsible for taking care of our soldiers and our country.

Toby Keith’s “American Soldier” demonstrates examples of pathos, ethos, and logos. The song explains a soldier’s feelings and responsibilities at hand. The emotions shown through the song are thankfulness, intenseness, and courageousness. The sound of the song is very soft in the beginning and picks up when he begins to talk about the duty he has. Ironically, the music change makes sense because he has to balance his time between work and family, and family is calming, while work on the other hand is intense. Toby Keith establishes credibility because he lives in America, knowing that freedom doesn’t come free, and the song is written in first person, describing when the songwriter went overseas. Toby Keith also establishes logos in his song…

He begins the song by saying American men or women “will always stand up and salute” defining their support for our nation(Keith). He didn’t want to just have focus on the national patriotism but relate to his father and the people who serve in our troops. He begins to mention the fact that we do have soldiers who have died for the country but justified it so that we can sleep “in peace” at night(Keith). Toby is clearly a “proud supporter of our army” standing by that our troops are fighting for a reason(Gillespie 9). He continues to tell the story of his father, who lost his right eye in the army, and yet still flew the American flag out in their yard till the day he died. Seeming to be random to add in his song but Keith is telling us to still stand by our nation even if something does go wrong. Of course corresponding to September 11, Keith calls the nation to act on after we have been “fallin’ under attack”(Keith). For us to tell the intruders that were going to “lit up your world”(Keith). To act “like the fourth of July,” when we take action. Him choosing these concrete words of a certain national independence holiday enfaces that he wants us to act like our “our fathers and forefathers did” to get the independence we live in…

I think this song was one of the more influential songs of the time period, and I think that this is evident in the length of time that this song has been prominent. Other than in the classic rock stations, you can hear this song all over the place, and it's not just limited to Vietnam…

The great depression was the one of the hardest year in American history. People were suffering economically, people were dying of starvation, and unemployment had risen. During this era music and art describe the emotion of American people. Music gave people hope, like the song “God Bless America” written by Kate Smith. This song reflected the ability to convey a message to Americans, by giving them faith and prosperity. Another depression-era song was “This Is Your Land” written by Woodie Guthrie in the 1940s. Gurthie believed in the poor, since he saw how people were dying in front of his eyes of starvation which caused him pain, being described in his song, another reason he wrote this song was because he was tired of hearing Kate Smith…

Other songs also helped like "America Calling" by Meredith Willson, which helped boost morale of the country and convinced men to enlist into the armed services. It reminds them about what this war is about and to support it. "Angels of Mercy" by Irving Berlin, which was created after the bombing of Pearl Harbor dedicating the American Red Cross nurses, portraying them as Angels of Mercy wounded victims overseas. "Back Home For Keeps" by Carmen Lombardo, which is about a wife waiting for her husband to return home. This song gave a good mood and also helped support the war. "Cowards Over Pearl Harbor" by Fred Rose, which gave great American Spirit by talking about how America will over Japan, the evil country. "G. I. Blues" by Floyd Tillman, which describes the view of an American Soldier at war. It describes them as being lazy and doing nothing, which makes him depressed and wanting to come home. His thinks that if they continue to have lazy soldiers, America will not be able to win. "Hello Mom" by Eddie Dunstedter, which was about more about the propaganda during the war and gave more morale. Plus, it also supported the war bonds. It helped the parents who had a son in the war…

    Song Of Deborah

FOr me, I find this song inspirational because I feel the singer is speaking to me. The song’s chorus in particular is the most inspirational. I feel like the singer wants me to be successful and is hoping for me to achieve my dreams. The most inspirational part is when it says, “And when you get it all just remember one thing, remember one thing, one man could change the world.” I feel this line has a lot of truth to it and can serve anyone well in life to try to follow it. Go after your dreams and if you achieve them try to help other people achieve their dreams and change the world. At the very end of the song, there are line from Sean speaking on the phone to his grandmother. His grandma thanks him for calling and thinking of her. I have a great relationship with my grandparents and this hits home for some reason. I think the reason it is in the song though is to try and show people that giving attention to the elderly is helping the world. This song does not relate much to the biblical songs. That is because those songs preach love and belief in God, while “One Man Can Change the World” focusses more on love and belief in yourself. Saying that, it doesn’t make the biblical songs any less inspirational. While belief in yourself is crucial in whatever you do, belief in Hashem is just as important. For that reason I do believe that biblical songs are inspiring to me because they are very upfront…

This song that everyone is so willing to place above human lives and our common concerns was never intended to be a fascist stick used to compel, all, to come to attention at the altar of military worship. In fact, just the opposite, liberty, freedom, in the beginning, had been, just that, freedom to pray where you please, or not to pray at all, to believe in what you wish or not to believe at all. We now must all do exactly what is acceptable to the herd or be shamed and ostracized as if to be a heretic to the religion of, Mob...…

For example, my Grandpa is a veteran, but he already has a home and a family to fall back on. Some people that are in the military do not have a home. They cannot afford a home and they can barely afford food after they are done being in the military. Some people don't have a family to take care of them. It is not like the veterans wanted this. They did not think that they were going to be homeless after all that they have done for us. That is why we need to assure them that they will be taken care of if the need to be taken care of. The people in the military to to know that they will not be out on the streets after what they have done for…

In this song, the writer is combining partly a love song, 'Countin' the ways to where you are', partly saying how fast your life goes, 'half-time goes by, suddenly your wise, in the blink of an eye, 67 is gone'. The whole song is going through the singers life, and picturing every part of it and basically telling you to value your life for it goes really fast. The line, 'I'm 45... for a moment, the sea is high and I'm heading into a crisis' is talking bout mid-life crisis's, and the line directly after, 'Chasing the years of my life' is talking about how people react to their mid-life crisis. The easy cliché shows them going out to buy a sports car, but…

Truth and justice are important to a good society, but more important is human dignity. Everyday American soldiers defend the rights and lives of those less able to defend themselves all over the world. While some may contend that it is not our responsibility to protect or defend the world, we cannot simply spout human rights and democratic ideals. We must be willing to help those who are oppressed achieve a measure of independence. We may not succeed in places like Iraq or Afghanistan, but the soldiers who defend others less able to defend themselves defend the true ideals on which this country was founded. We must provide our support in many ways including humanitarian aid, education, and military intervention.…

The overall message that the song is portraying is Americans are thankful for everyone who helped fight for freedom. Freedom is the reason why people can live their lives. Also, freedom makes the country beautiful. The title is called “God Bless The U.S.A” and the first line in the second line starts with “I’d thank my lucky stars” which suggest the tone is thankful and grateful to be living in such a great country and to be an American. I picked this song because it talks about how great our country is and I love knowing my whole life I will have so many opportunities to do so many things because I have freedom. The similarity the song and I have is being thankful for having freedom and to live in this beautiful…
