4. Written Assignment:
Your written assignment is near and dear to my heart!  While the PALS model is different in several ways from the model I employ, its objectives are the same and its outcomes are significant enough to merit it being labeled a “best practice” by the U.S. Department of Education Program Effectiveness Panel.  I hope that you will take the time to navigate and explore the PALS module in depth.  It is a very valuable resource. Use the link provided in the Week 2 Written Assignments folder for the Iris Learning Center: PALS Reading Strategy- Iris Learning Center.  Within the website, click the “Navigating an IRIS Module” located on the right side of the webpage.  Follow the directions to complete each section of the learning module.  For your written assignment, you will complete a 2-3 page paper.  The following topics are to be addressed in your paper: 1.   List five benefits of PALS. Explain why they are valuable to teachers or students. 2.   Compare and contrast the specific reading skills addressed by K-PALS and first-grade PALS. 3.   Compare the recommended method of grouping students for K-PALS to the method suggested for first-grade students.  4.   Imagine that you are Ms. Sweeney, a kindergarten teacher implementing PALS. Of your 20 students, one is absent, leaving one student without a partner. How would you ensure that each student could participate in your regularly scheduled K-PALS session? 5.   Imagine you are Mrs. Miselem, a first-grade teacher, and you are planning to implement PALS for the first time. What two steps might you take to promote a healthy team environment? (15 points) Please take a moment to look at the grading rubric. If you tailor your paper to the elements on the rubric, I know you’ll do great!
