Soldier X
Soldier X, by Don Wulffson is a Historical Fiction book. It was first published in 2003 .The story occurs during the World War II .This story is told in first-person participant Erik Brandt ,the protagonist. Don Wulffson also wrote a book called “The Kid Who Invented the Popsicle”. I chose Soldier X because of the interesting title and a picture of a Russian emblem on the cover.

The story takes place in several countries including Germany, Russia, Cheslovakia, and United States. There are three chief characters .They are Erik Brandt , a 16 year old boy who gets called to serve in the German army; Tamara, a young Russian nurse and Dobelmann, a German general who helps Erik to fight in the army. The story begins when Erik is drafted into the German army and sent to fight on the Russian front. He gets injured during a Russian attack .The Russians take him to their hospital. Erik suffers serious injuries and spends 3 months in the hospital. Surprisingly the Russians did not discover that he was German because his mother was Russian and she taught him to speak Russian fluently. When he was about to leave the hospital Germans were advancing and he had to help the hospital move. On the busses there was no room so he and his friends Tamara and Sergei had to run away from Germans. They experienced the horrors of war. They saw lots of fatal injuries, blood splatters on the fields and dead bodies. He went through fear of being killed and killing other soldiers.

This book caused a lot of emotions in me. I felt sad when Erik gets seriously injured .I felt shocked by all of the deaths described and the living conditions on the front. I also felt happy when Erik reunites with his parents and marries Tamara. I learned a lot about the World War II and difficulties of that time. It gives me more understanding of what our troops have experienced in Iraq and Afghanistan. The characters were unbelievable. Erik was very brave and persevered. I really liked this story...
